Newest P3 FW Upgrade

W4JBB
I absolutely cannot upgrade to the latest P3 FW (1.25).  I had similar
issues with 1.24, but it eventually loaded after several attempts.

I have tried about seven or eight times and it always gets to the same
spot and I then get a message, "Elecraft P3 Utility quit unexpectedly."
FW version 1.24 would get to different spots before it quit.

I am using the latest P3 Utility for the Mac 1.13.2.3.  It also locks up
with a previous version of the P3 Utility.

I tried re-loading 1.24 and I get the same error at what appears to be
the same point of the load.  I really cannot tell you where it stops as
the Utility quits and does not show the last message.

I can reboot the P3 and it appears to work fine and restarting the P3
Utility tells me whatever version FW is on it.  However, it is a tad
disconcerting that the FW load never completes.

I have tried different baud rates, but it won't even attempt to load at
anything other than 38k4.  I seem to remember reading somewhere that you
can only load FW at 38k4, but I cannot find that reference now and I
probably dreamed it.

If I am missing something, please, enlighten me.

Thanks,
Joel - W4JBB

Re: Newest P3 FW Upgrade

An update:

I have tried different USB ports on the computer and a different cable.
I cannot use a true RS232 cable as I have no true RS232 port.

So, I don't know if the P3 is fully loaded or not.

What do you mean by a different cable? What kind of USB-Serial adapter are you using? Can you try a different USB to serial adapter?

In reply to this post by W4JBB
Joel,

It sounds like you are having a problem with your USB/Serial Adapter. Make sure you have the latest driver installed for your adapter. Also make sure that the connector is securely fastened to the P3. There is no need to change baud rates. The Utility will automatically switch to 38.4k for firmware downloads. I would leave the P3 at 38.4k all the time. What brand of USB/Serial adapter are you using?

Re: Newest P3 FW Upgrade (Workaround)

W4JBB
In reply to this post by W4JBB
Read almost all the posts and one stuck with me - the one who stated
everything worked fine on a Win7 machine using the same cable.

On a lark, I started my Win 7 virtual machine through VMware, downloaded
and installed the P3 Utility, and connected to the P3 - voila, it worked.

This is going through the exact same machine, using the same USB
adapater with the USB adapter plugged into the same port. In other
words, I did not change a thing. This VMware machine has caused me all
kinds of grief and has only recently started working somewhat reliably.
However, it allowed me to load the firmware.

The only thing different was the fact that I received FW 1.26 instead of
1.25.

None of this answers why the FW load (either 1.24 or 1.25) always
stopped at the same point in the load on the Mac version. I have no idea...

Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Newest P3 FW Upgrade (Workaround)

Bill Frantz
I just finished upgrading my P3 to MCU 1.26, SVGA 1.16 and FPGAx
1.04. The MCU loaded OK but then it rejected the SVGA. I
followed the instructions to power cycle the P3 (and K3 since
that was the closest P3 power switch). I tried a full reload
("Send all Firmware to P3") and it hung again. I power cycled it
again, with a count to 10 while off and used "Send All New
Firmware to P3" and it worked.

   MacOS 10.7.5
   Elecraft USB <--> RS232 adapter
   P3 utility 1.12.10.4 (Mac version)

Re: Newest P3 FW Upgrade (Workaround)

Stephen G4SJP
It took me three attempts, failing on the SVGA load the first two times,
even after switching both K3 and P3 off and then on.

I don't know whether this is significant but I had the SVGA disabled (I
have no monitor connected at the moment) the first two times but then
decided to turn it back on and the SVGA loaded okay  - it could have been
coincicidence of course.  I had similar issues last upload as well which is
very much in contrast to the troublefree uploads I have done on the K3 and
KX3 over the years.

We released 1.13.1.23 (PC) and 1.13.2.3 (Mac/Linux) versions of the P3 Utility to fix many of the issues mentioned here.  Has anyone had problems loading new firmware with the new Utility and if so what are they?

Re: Newest P3 FW Upgrade (Workaround)

Dave Van Wallaghen
Paul,

I was using the latest Linux version and the load failed on the SVGA
load asking me to power the P3 on an off again. I did that and it failed
again. I then rebooted everything (K3, P3 and PC) and when I brought up
the utility the only thing not updated was the SVGA code. I used the
"Send New Firmware" option to just send that one and it worked.

I, unlike another user, had the SVGA option enabled at the time but do
not have a monitor hooked up at this time.

Side issue with the Linux version is that when I told it to go download
the latest from Elecraft it returned a 127 error (ftp???). I used my own
ftp client and downloaded it locally to do the load.

Let me know if there is something I can test for you if you need it.

Dave W8FGU

Dave,

The 127 error indicates that you do not have cUrl installed on your Linux distro.

Re: Newest P3 FW Upgrade (Workaround)

Cady, Fred
In reply to this post by Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Paul,
I got: Error Code 0xE2000202: No response to SVGA boot block sync
command.
SVGA verification failed.

Turned the P3 off and then back on and uploaded all new firmware and all
went well.

I don't know if the SVGA was on or off in either case as I don't have a
monitor connected to the P3. Would it be possible to display the state
of the SVGA when you go into the SVGA en menu? Then tapping the switch
would toggle it. Maybe some of the other SVGA menu controls could
display the current state too (SVGA data, fntD, font, FW, res, WinR and
WinT).

I rarely have a monitor hooked up and I think it makes sense to have the
SVGA disabled.

Cheers and thanks,
Fred KE7X
