OT - 32 or 64 bit Windows 7

RobertG
Sorry for the OT, but this reflector is about the only place I trust for good info.

I want to buy Win7 before it's no longer available [Win8 seems too far out for me]. I
have a 64bit processor. What's the experience with the 32 bit versus 64 bit versions
for operating the range of "customary" ham software [N1MM, NaP3, HamCAP, WinKey,
Rufz, etc]? Thanks much.

Unless you have some very old software go with 64 bit.

I run most all of those on a Win7 64 machine with no problems.

Win7-64 bit works fine here with the Elecraft Utility, Memory Program,
LP-Bridge, NaP3 and K3EZ.

Re: OT - 32 or 64 bit Windows 7

Brian Hunt
In reply to this post by RobertG
The only issue I had was getting the computer/rig interface working.  My
old computer had a real serial port so it was my first experience in
USB/serial adapters.  The one with the FTDI chipset worked fine with
Win7 drivers.  I never could find a Win7 driver that would work with the
older Prolific chipset adapter.  YMMV.

There is a Windows XP compatibility mode you can set in the
application's Properties dialog that helped me with a few of my older
apps (not ham radio related).  I've also heard mentioned some erratic CW
being sent via N1MM due to USB timing issues but I haven't experienced
it myself.

I'm not sure that any of these are 32 vs 64 bit OS issues, however. Good
luck!

And the amount of RAM you can install could lead to a big performance increase!

I've been running 64bit for over a year and had zero problems with anything including n1mm and elecraft utility.

Win 7 64 bit can load almost any 32 bit software i tried. He has a backward compatibility mode that you can try if the software doesn't run at first try.
You will find 32 bit programs in c:\program files x86 directory.
I currently use two old prolific usb to rs232 converters regularly without any issue.

Thanks to all who have offered their experience and advice, both on and off the list.
The unanimous opinion is to go with the 64bit Version of Win7. No one has reported
any problems, either ham-centric or otherwise. This is a good and sufficient
sampling, so seems best to end this thread here and make space for others. Again,
thanks to members of the list and to Elecraft.
