50 years ago plus a few days, a 13-year old kid feverishly tore open a
little envelope and for the first time saw the call sign that would identify him to the radio world. Dated October 30, 1956, that 'ticket' and those letters (less one 'N') have been with me since, through so many jobs, a couple of marriages, kids being born and kids growing up, foreign lands, cats, dogs, motorcycle wrecks, you name it. I intend to have a cold 807 this afternoon in honor of everyone that's added to my enjoyment of radio over the past 50 years, those who helped me learn the code, lent me equipment when I had no money, helped me put up antennas, and yes, produced kits that gave me hours of pleasure and inspired a tube-oriented guy to learn a little about today's electronics. Thanks, guys. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Vic:
Congratulations on your 50th year in this wonderful hobby. Your email got me to checking and I also will celebrate the completion of 50 years on the 27th of this month. On November 27, 1956, at the ripe age of 16, I received the callsign KN4LXU. In March 1957 I removed the "N" from the call when I passed my General class license and in January 1967 I passed the exam for my "Extra Class" and was issued Amateur Extral Class Radio Operators License Certificate number AE-8M-31. The 31th to be issued in the Mobile, Alabama FCC office. I don't remember the exact date that I changed my callsign to K4ZM but it was during the first chance the FCC offered to Extras and in the early 1970's. Also note that all exams except for the Novice were taken in front of an FCC Engineer and involved drawing diagrams and coping CW. I have been active all 50 years and still have a passion for the hobby. My interest in amateur radio provided me with the first step into my fantastic career in the electronics industry that spanned from Aviation Electronics in the US Navy to Technical Assistance Agent for a local electronics manunfacture and included a short time in electronic sales, service of medical electronics equipment, service of communications equipment and a stent of 21 years as the director of a biomedical department in a local hospital. I retired from the hospital 7 years ago and in August of this year a local electronics manufacture asked me to come out of retirement and provide technical support for its customers. So at 66 I am back in the working world. LOL I hope I have at least 30 more years in amateur radio....LOL Thanks for the reminder and the trip down memory lane. 73 Jim Younce K4ZM _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Good show and many, many more. I think I can imagine how you feel. My first license arrived on October 14, 1967. October 14 was the day Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the X-1. That Novice license was dated October 12 - Columbus Day. Talk about opening new worlds! Next October it will be 40 years for me. Despite all that has happened, it doesn't seem that long. 73 de Jim, N2EY _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Congratulations to both Vic and Jim. Jim, I'll have to tell you that
one of the most intimidating experiences of my life was taking the novice exam at the FCC office in Los Angeles at the ripe old age of 13. I've enjoyed Ham Radio ever since and like you, it influenced my career choices. 73 - Bob, N7XY _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
