The boom mic on my CM-500 is now flopping around held only by
the signal wire. Any ideas about how to reattach it? What are the best replacement headsets these days. Someone said that the CM-500 has changed for the worse in the last few years. I bought a new CM-500 set on Amazon about two years ago. They feel great on my head and work wonderfully.
In May I decided to try the Koss SB-45. Price was good (about $30 from Amazon). They feel very similar to my Heil headset, meaning about the same as putting my head in a vise. Simply too tight on my head, especially for wearing them through a 48 hour contest. I went back to the CM-500s. I find it worth paying the $60 from Amazon to get these instead of something else. 73! I have fixed two broken Heil headsets with copious amount of JB weld. Looks like ... well anyway that worked well. They never broke again at those spot.
I bought an aviation headset dirt cheap at an estate sale and converted it for ham usage. That thing will never fail. 73, Mike WA5POK On Sunday, November 1, 2020, 05:14:27 PM EST, Bill Frantz <[hidden email]> wrote: The boom mic on my CM-500 is now flopping around held only by the signal wire. From my experience, some of the CM-500s have an electret mic and others a dynamic mic. I don’t know if its an age factor.
I use mine with my YAESU FT-897 and with my Kenwood TS-480, don’t have the adapter at this point to use with the KX3...Pretty good for an in-expensive boom mic. 73 de Jose Douglas KB1TCD Sent from my iPad > On Nov 1, 2020, at 8:40 PM, Walter Underwood <[hidden email]> wrote: > > I tried a Koss SB-45 headset and hated it. Hmmm. I've used nothing but a CM500 since about 2008, and I've never
seen one with a dynamic mic. The data sheet for all of them has said it was dynamic, but none of then were. 73, Jim K9YC On 11/1/2020 6:05 PM, JP Douglas wrote: > From my experience, some of the CM-500s have an electret mic and others a dynamic mic. My CM500 certainly has an electret insert and it came with a separate
plug-in battery bias pack. Unfortunately the ear pads are starting to deteriorate. Have you had to replace yours? If so, with what? ISTR I read somewhere that new separate pads are not available. 73, Alan. Right, they're not user replaceable, nor is the cable. The earpads for my Sony MDR7506 phones are user replaceable, but the cable is not. I've owned several sets of them that I've used for many years, and never had a problem with the cord, but I did buy a set for $5 at a ham flea market with a bad cable. :) Some of the German headphones have user replaceable cables, especially those used for stage intercom and by broadcasters, but they're not nearly as comfortable, don't sound nearly as good, and are fairly exp0ensive. Beyer, AKG, and Sennheiser make some very nice phones -- they're first rate manufacturers. I have a pair of Beyer DT880Pro that I like for listening to acoustic music, mostly jazz. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |
FWIW, I was able to get inside the headphone on my CM-500s that receives
the cable, and to repair a broken connection. The secret is a couple of small Philips screws hidden under the earphone pads, accessible from the inside of the pads by pushing them out 73, Pete N4ZR Check out the Reverse Beacon Network at <http://reversebeacon.net>, now spotting RTTY activity worldwide. I solved the CM-500 pad wear problem by getting some black Geekria cloth
covers from Amazon. They fit snugly around the pads. On the right side the top of the cover tended to slide down until I got out a needle and thread and tied the edges together on the outside of the headset, just under the R. Now the pads should last a long time. The covers come as two pairs. I have not replaced the first pair after a couple of years. They show no wear at all. 73, Jim W6YA ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

Jack,
I have BOTH the CM-500 and the SB-45, as well as a Heil Proset. I like all three for different reasons. The CM-500 is comfortable, and has the best mic boom, it has an enormous output from the electret mic — nearly too much for my K3. I used it effectively with the K2. The SB-45 is very comfortable but has a flimsy mic boom that tends to wiggle when I move my head. I can wear it for hours. The Heil Proset has the best frequency response in the headphones, and has an HC-4 element, which is unobtanium today. My problem with it is it hurt my ears after wearing it for an hour. I fixed that problem recently by buying some oversize earopads from Brainwavz. It is now just as comfortable as the CM-500 or SB-45. > On Nov 1, 2020, at 5:31 PM, Jack Brindle via Elecraft <[hidden email]> wrote: > > I bought a new CM-500 set on Amazon about two years ago.
