OT? Heil Headset

Craig WØLV
I have an older proset with an HC-4 element.  What is the difference between the one that Elecraft offers and what I have?

If there is a lot of difference, can I change the wetup in the Rig to match the element?

Craig,

The Proset-K2 uses an electret element (like the MH2 and MD2), thus has
a high output level and needs bias.  The Heil HC-4 element is a dynamic
type and does not need bias.  The Heil HC-4 and HC-5 elements typically
have lower output levels than the typical dynamic microphones.  The HC-4
has a more restricted bandpass - reportedly optimized for DX (see the
Heilsound website).

You can make up your mind about which is better.  Both can work well
with the K3.

I use the stock Heil headset/mic I got from Elecraft.  I get rave
reviews on my audio quality.  My wife has listened to my K3DVR
recordings and said it sounded just like me.  I'm somewhat hearing
impaired, I have to trust others' judgement.

The HC-4 has less low end and a more peaked response.  In general,
setting the K3 for rP.H or fP.H (high gain) and turning off the bias
should be all you need to do for the HC-4.  If the HC-4 is lacking
in low end for your taste, you can use the TX EQ to bring up the
200 Hz setting by 6 dB (band 3 = +6dB).  You should not need any other
changes (leave band 1 and band 2 turned down as the 50 Hz and 100 Hz
spectrum adds nothing to SSB communication).
