I have an older proset with an HC-4 element. What is the difference between the one that Elecraft offers and what I have?
If there is a lot of difference, can I change the wetup in the Rig to match the element? Craig WØLV |

Craig,
The Proset-K2 uses an electret element (like the MH2 and MD2), thus has a high output level and needs bias. The Heil HC-4 element is a dynamic type and does not need bias. The Heil HC-4 and HC-5 elements typically have lower output levels than the typical dynamic microphones. The HC-4 has a more restricted bandpass - reportedly optimized for DX (see the Heilsound website). You can make up your mind about which is better. Both can work well with the K3. 73, Don W3FPR Craig WØLV wrote: > I have an older proset with an HC-4 element. My wife has listened to my K3DVR recordings and said it sounded just like me. I'm somewhat hearing impaired, I have to trust others' judgement. In general, setting the K3 for rP.H or fP.H (high gain) and turning off the bias should be all you need to do for the HC-4. If the HC-4 is lacking in low end for your taste, you can use the TX EQ to bring up the 200 Hz setting by 6 dB (band 3 = +6dB). You should not need any other changes (leave band 1 and band 2 turned down as the 50 Hz and 100 Hz spectrum adds nothing to SSB communication). 73, ...
