OT: High school drafting class,

edauer
I never took a drafting class nor anything like it in high school, yet its
absence never hurt me professionally.  Making a straight line is not a skill
required of a lawyer.

Re: OT: High school drafting class,

I guess I missed out. Never had a formal course. No drafting in high school, and no drafting during undergraduate and graduate EE at Rice in the 60s. A straight edge and logic element templates in various sizes, were all the drafting skills needed. Board layout and a few other things were picked up as exercises for the the student.

But writing legibly is, and that was a VERY important contribution of my
technical drawing classes. My script has become pretty flaky with age,
but my printing is still pretty legible.

This turned out to be a popular subject line. Here goes...

I was too busy with AP classes to take drafting in high school. But I had to take it when I went off to the College of Engineering to be an Electrical Engineer. And I am glad I did take it. Of course, now it is all CAD systems…

We called it Mechanical Drawing.
I am not in engineering field, but it is handy sometimes.

Ted,

Does that mean that you were allowed to "color outside the lines"?
As an engineer, I always had to "stay between the lines" (my creativity
had to be placed in other directions, not exceeding specs) but that is
good advice for drivers too - as well as clean side up and dirty side down.

My handwriting was always poor.  Guess that's why they made me go into
medicine.

Golly, Jim hit it ion the head. Same with me, script has gone south, but printing is still pretty good. We had to print all our reports way back when I was working. Now all the guys use computers in the car. Guess that's progress.  Mike n6zw

Re: OT: High school drafting class,

KR7X
I thought I could refrain from adding to the Hubris but here goes:

I took drafting in HS (early 60's) it was called drafting. Learned plan,
projection, 3-D projection, etc. All done on paper and pencil with wood
drafting board, T-Square and Triangles. Note the pencil was not mechanical
and the hard part was to get consistent line width and weight.

In the university as a freshmen in engineering a required course was
engineering fundamentals where one semester was devoted to mechanical
drafting and lettering, another to nomograph and other visual presentation
methods.
As a still practicing civil and structural engineer (50+ years) I still at
times hand sketch and letter design calculations. For certain tasks it, for
me, is the most expedient method to produce the work. I have gone thru the
ink on mylar, plastic lead on mylar, pencil on paper, autocad, microstation
methods of preparing engineering drawings for construction and fabrication.

Do I miss the old methods, not really, what I miss is the character and
lettering style of old hand drawings, some of which I consider art. P.S. my
hand lettering skill is faster than my script skill and way, way more
legible, Hi!

Henry S. Lonberg, Jr, P.E., S.E., P.L.S.

Re: OT: High school drafting class,

Bill Lederer
In reply to this post by Jim Brown-10
My cursive died when I got to engineering school, and now even my printing
is not improving, to some extent to writing mostly with keyboard.

No drafting in High School, but my first Freshman course in the EE program
was pretty awesome. Professor Kliphardt taught us mechanical drawing, where
we learned to make 3-d drawings of various objects, solving problems like a
pipe coming through a wall and determining if it intersected a desk or the
person sitting there. You would solve this by rotating the drawing, using
projection to spot the path. He would do all these drawings with a chalk
and a piece of string. Was amazing to watch.

Was a very fun course. (The next quarter was intro to computer programming,
and that derailed me for the next several decades)
