OT: Oh the lovely noise

Thom Durfee
Just hooked up my Ten-Tec RX340D  SDR to my 40 meter dipole.

from all the new CFL lightbulbs in my neighborhood I get more than S9
+40db of noise.

looks like no ham radio at home.

maybe I will have better luck at my daughters 75 miles away.

Dont give up in despair Thom !  It may not be as bad as you think.
If you can run the Ten Tec off of a 12v battery, turn off the main breaker to your home
and see if it is still there.   If it goes away, then one by one turn on each breaker to see which
circuit has the offender, then check everything on that circuit.  That seems pretty strong
to me and sounds like what I have experienced in the past at my place.   One time it turned
out to be a DirecTV receiver, which power supply runs all the time even when it is off. It was
very strong like what you have.  Another time it was a Makita battery charger for a portable drill.

Seems unlikely. I have a number of these bulbs in my home and see nothing like that. There is some noise from these but manageable. Look further for your sources of noise.

Re: OT: Oh the lovely noise

Mike B-12
Agreed.  I've been using an increasing number of CFLs since the mid-90s, and
despite testing, I've never really had a problem with them.  Not to say there
aren't some brands out there that truthfully started the stereotype, but I
haven't found them.  OTOH, there was a plasma TV in a work rental house in
Hawaii one time, that obliterated everything on HF.

I agree.  I have a house full of CFLs and have had for many years.  I don't
believe I have every come across a noisy one.  Some of the LED lamps are
horrendous however.

I find it difficult to believe that you'd be getting noise levels that
high from CFLs.  I have several in my home (different brands ... nothing
special) and I haven't experienced anything being even close to that
extreme.  If you're getting S9+40 QRN you should be able to pinpoint the
cause, and I doubt you will find it coming from a CFL.

I use them and don't have any issues.  Grow lamps are a different story.  Anybody growing pot in your neighborhood?  Bad news!

I have 9 of them installed in my house with 2 in the shack and have none of
the problems your having. I would advise to look beyond for some other
problems yours seem quite bad.

Re: OT: Oh the lovely noise

Mike Sanders
Yes, I have 33 in service including in the shack. No problems.
As Fred says your probably looking at a very local single signal
source. It can be tough but then again you might get lucky. How
about a close in plasma TV?? GL es 73
