Hi John,
It's my way of placating the doctors and being compliant. Before this I I have gone through 4 ICD's and had no trouble but I would rather not rock the boat too much. No there is no problem with RF in the shack even full legal power. 73 de Tim, KQ8M -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of [hidden email] Sent: Thursday, January 4, 2018 10:56 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] OT: Pigremote availability I understand you being cautious however I am curious, is there RF inside the shack (assuming quality coax and common mode chokes)? Ditto John's question. I really wonder about Med advice if the shack is clean. I have a friend who gave up hf without discussion of QRPpp, etc. Chokes, matched antennas, all would seem to be a good route and if you can get a buddy to help check when you are out of the shack?

You know, if it were me, I would closely follow my doctor’s advice. Being the one-in-a-million case would not be very fun at all. Waiting a short while would be much better than suffering any problems.
Besides, the time might be useful in learning some new technology, such as receiving FT8, designing something new, learning how to operate a remote station, improving my CW (using one of N3WG’s other products) or the like. There is a LOT to do in ham radio without putting a signal on the air! - Jack, W6FB > On Jan 4, 2018, at 2:32 PM, Bill Johnson <[hidden email]> wrote: > > Ditto John's question. You could even use a VOIP system called CQ100 which simulates ham radio
very well - does require a license to use, and provides "ham radio" to many many hams that cannot put up antennas or have stations. Sure, it not "real radio" but it sure beats watching TV. The use of live posting JPG pictures during QSOs is also supported. Hello Tim.
I feel your pain, as I was recently forced away from my shack as I recovered from a medical procedure. Follow the doc's advice. They may or may not know best, but don't tempt fate. As an aside a friend of mine had a pace maker/defibrillator installed. Doc told him same thing your doc advised. Upon further research of the implanted device, the manufacturer confirmed that the implanted device was immune to RF at the frequencies us hams use (at least the HF bands). Might be worth while to do some research on your own and then consult with your doctor. Just my two cents worth. With respect to remote control of your station. I have employed many methods, many of those mentioned in this thread. My fall back this time around (for reasons beyond the scope of this thread) is to employ TeamViewer software at the station and also on a laptop or desktop in the other room, etc. You can download a free copy of Teamviwer as long as you do not use it commercially. Teamviewer supports audio (stereo no less!) so you don't have to use Skype. No muss or fuss setting it up (no port forwarding or DMZing). At the station end the PC will need to be hooked up to the rig for CAT control, audio in/out and a Mic connection. Easy enough to do. The most difficult part is setting up audio levels. The plus side is that once you've got the audio all worked out, the digital stuff like FT8 is a snap to impliment. If you would like some mentoring, help, advice or just bounce ideas, I'm all ears and willing to guide you. Congratulations on the new heart and lease on life, Happy New Year! 73 Chet VE3CFK ________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |
Forgot to mention in last post that you will also need something like TRX Manager, Ham Radio Deluxe or other comparable software that will interface with you your rig. TeamViewer only allows you to see and control what is running on your other computer. It will not interface with your rig.

Tim,
One helpful feature of the K3 is the availability of TX TEST - that does not transmit any RF but all other the transmit controls work. So you can work at setting the audio levels sitting right next to the K3 with no danger. Once you have everything set up, turn TX TEST off and move to a safe location. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/5/2018 7:39 AM, Chester Latawiec wrote: The most difficult part is setting up audio levels. This is more a reply to everyone and not just one specific person.
I received many great responses with fantastic ideas. Some I have tried in the past some I have not. I would like to thank all of you for your ideas and well wishes. This gives me hope for mankind. On the question of RF and pacemakers/ICD's I agree there is a greater chance of getting hit by lightning than RF affecting the device BUT people do get hit by lightning so their chances are one. I have had 4 previous ICD's implanted and have done the research on all and have never had a problem so I doubt I will with this but right now, after being in the hospital since Nov 20th, I need to remote control the station for if and when it happens again. The radio simulator is not appealing to me nor will I pay someone else to use their station. Again thank you for all of your great suggestions. 73, Tim, KQ8M [hidden email] -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Friday, January 5, 2018 8:15 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] OT: Pigremote availability Tim, One helpful feature of the K3 is the availability of TX TEST - that does not transmit any RF but all other the transmit controls work.
