A friend of mine recently retired and has expressed a desire to learn
code (International Morse). I hope that someone on this list may have taught code as part of an Amateur Radio class and will have a suggestion of a good software package that my friend could use. Google it and download. It is a CD image and can be dropped onto an mp3 player also. There are pdf's in there to check your answers etc. I cannot recommend this package highly enough. Speed is never mentioned. I am about to restart it myself (never got through it the first time) to get my code speed up and hopefully get the most out of my K3 when I get it :) Ian -- Ian J Maude, G0VGS SysOp GB7MBC DX Cluster Member RSGB, GQRP K2 #4044 |K3 #? _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Take a look at MorseGen, on my web page. It can train using the Koch
method, where you start off learning a few characters at a time at a high speed, so you don't get the bad habit of counting dots and dashes the way *I* learned. And it can also create MP3 files you can copy to an iPod (or a cheap Chinese MP3 player from eBay) and carry around for practise. It's also free. -- Julian, G4ILO K2 s/n: 392 K3 s/n: ??? On top of all the the posts - look at
http://www.fists.org/ - US chapter of FISTS - we don't just work each other and we encourage people new to CW http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KochMorse/ - this is a great learning tool and the group is very helpful too http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SolidCpyCW/?yguid=274363652 - this one seems to be more US biased On 19/10/07 06:08, "Corboy-Poteet" <[hidden email]> sent: > A friend of mine recently retired and has expressed a desire to learn > code (International Morse). whilst the tools for learning are important and I am sure you will
receive many suggestions on that front. By far the most important factor to successfully learning the code is the approach taken. The best book by far that I have ever read on the subject is The Art and Skill of Radio-Telegraphy which can be read on line in various formats here. http://www.zerobeat.net/tasrt/ 73 Brendan EI6IZ _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I always recommend trying both the K7QO course that Ian mentions and
the G4FON CW Trainer (www.g4fon.net). They use different techniques, and some people prefer one and some prefer the other. It depends on a person's learning style. 73! My absolute favorite. The only problem is I have not found anything
to do as well in Linux. He keeps updating it, getting better all the time and it is free. http://www.g4fon.net/ David Wilburn [hidden email] K4DGW K2 #5982 FP#-1751 Corboy-Poteet wrote: > A friend of mine recently retired and has expressed a desire to learn > code (International Morse). Mike,
Just Lean Morse Code is my favorite. The G4FON is great but requires an add-on to allow entering text on the screen. The Just Learn Morse Code program lets you enter copy as you hear it and corrects it giving your the total percentage correct and a list of all charcters with the number of each missed, listed in the order of most missed down. I still use the G4FON software for somethings! It is great for randomly generated QSOs Many years ago I wrote an article about learning code (see www.jackandginger.com) but finally got it together recently using the Just Learn Morse Code program. BTW, I passed the 10 WPM Code Proficieny test in August of this year and in September I got the 15 WPM endorsement. Last week I took the 20 WPM test and almost passed it. I expect to pass it on one of the qualifying runs in November. Since I built my KX1 last year I have been operating almost exclusively CW! Jack, AE6GC PS Last but not least, remember, in learning code, faster is easier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
