[OT]VP6DX on 160 - GOT HIM!

Ken Wagner K3IU

After reading Tom's (N0SS) email yesterday morning, I became motivated
to try and snag Ducie Is. on 160m. My antenna is an 85 ft doublet CF
with window line up abt 32 feet on one end and 20 feet on the other.
I've never had much success on 160, but I tied the 2 legs of the
feedline together, connected it to one side of the balun, and ran a
short piece of wire from the other balun connection about 8 feet over to
my outside ground rod, and fired up the K3.  It's a cold morning here
(abt 20F), and between my furnace running and normal atmospheric noise,
all I heard was noise.  When the furnace stopped, WOW! There he was.  He
was listening "Down 3" so I set up VFO B, split, and fired away. Got
him... second try (0856Z). I am amazed. Those guys are GOOD! It must be
awfully quiet out there in the middle of the Pacific.

Wheeee, Indeed! Try it... it might work for you, too.

Hi Ken:

CONGRATULATIONS PAL!  Nice catch.

And yes... I guess the power lines out to Ducie must be 'very clean'
indeed... heheh!

When I got home from work yesterday I installed some supports for the open wire feedline to keep it off the ground
(short 4-ft T-posts with a 5-ft PVC sleeve).  I splieced in the feedline (did not have time to solder it - thats
today).  The 240 ft doublet is fed into the BL2 and then to the K3.  The tuner had no problem tuning it on all bands,
160-6M.  I proceeded to work VP6DX on 30 CW and RTTY and also got them on 160.  I had one radio set to get them on 40
SSB and the other on 80 CW, But for 3 straight hours it was EU ONLY.  Needless to say there was frustration!  But was
glad to get them on 160.

RE: [OT]VP6DX

Charly

Talking abt waiting out an "EU only" calling practice of 3 hrs from VP6DX.....
realize that there is NEVER a directional CQ for South East Asia.

DXpeditions rarely call for "Africa only,"  "VK ZL only," nor "South Asia only."

An "Asia only" call really means "JA" if such a call was ever made.
