[OT] Windows XP SP3 :<(

Gary Hvizdak
Even after the recent news reports about problems with it, I just made the
stupid mistake of installing Microsoft's XP Service Pack 3 on my Dell
Dimension 9100 with ATI Radeon display adaptor.  Afterwards my 20" flat
panel monitor (which supports 1600 x 1200 DPI resolution at 32 bit color
depth) was reduced to 648 x 480 @ 16 colors.  I was able to increase this
all the way to 800 x 600 @ 16 colors!

Three hours later I'm now back on SP2.

I have submitted a report to Microsoft about this.

The problem may be due to my having rotated my display to portrait
orientation during the installation of SP3, but I'm not about try
reinstalling SP3 to find out.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Even with Microsoft's vast resources they can't release bug free updates. Worth thinking about the next time a K3 software update breaks something...

We're all beta testers now.

I found my SP3 removed bugs that plagued me before the release.  This
replaces building our own and trying to fix it.  :-)

S Sacco
This is not a particularly good comparison.  Windows is enormously
more complicated than the firmware used to drive the K3, and in
addition, it has to support an almost unlimited combination of
hardware.

I consider it practically a miracle that Windows works as well as it
does, but the complexity has not been lost on many video game
publishers, who have retreated to the more static game consoles.

Microsoft introduced SP3 in order to kill XP and make it easier for
corporate Americal to recommend the change to VISTA.

Of course, you could always update Windows to ubuntu.

This is not unusual for service packs.  In the past, I just updated
the drivers for the video card / display and it restores all to its
former glory.  Not that I am a big proponent of M$, as this is written
from a Ubuntu Linux Box.

If and when the four major programs that I depend on daily
(WordPerfect, Thunderbird, Firefox and Folio Bound VIEWS - my
communications law legal research database engine -  come out with 100%
Linux native versions (WINE won't handle the database program and I
didn't try it on the others) I will consider going back to Linux (I ran
Red Hat for a while).

Heck, before I went to Windows I ran IBM's OS/2 and its derivative
eComStation - which ran DOS and Win3 programs as well as native OS/2
programs - for many years until Folio dropped the 16-bit (Win3) support
and more and more applications required "real" 32-bit support.

My ham stuff runs in a separate machine (running Win 2000 at present) so
I can play with that without messing up my "main" machine.

I've ranted about this for years, so I'll get down from my soapbox and
behave.....

Well, Phil, at least you're halfway there... both Thunderbird and
Firefox come in native Linux versions.

Actually, three quarters - somewhere around here I have a Linux
WordPerfect disk set that I got years ago when I was playing with
RedHat.  Is ubuntu that much better?

Fortunately, I built my main computer with slide-out hard disk trays, so
it's a no-brainer to put a new set in and try different OS-es.  I may do
that one of these days when I can discover a 40-hour day....these
32-hour days are just not long enough!  <g>
