OT- item return upon dead on arrival (DOA) - usual commercial practice

Johnny Siu
Hello Group,

It is absolutely OT and you can press your DEL button now.  However, I do need your advice.

In mid December 2013, I purchased a LiFe battery pack known as Energy Bar 250 from a dealer, Aircraft Spruce:

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/sunsocket11-12101.php?clickkey=1056768

Unfortunately, the unit was found to be defective two days after arrival.  I returned the defective unit to Aircraft Spruce and asked for a replacement.  The replacement unit is now on its way to Hong Kong.  However, I was charged with the shipping cost of this replacement unit from USA to Hong Kong.

From my past experience of purchases from US dealers (including Elecraft, HRO etc), I was only responsibile for one way shipping cost from Hong Kong to USA when returning a defective item for replacement / repair under warranty or DOA.

Could any of you advise whether my experience with Aircraft Spruce (i.e. charging me the returning shipping cost from USA to Hong Kong) is normal?  Is it a usual market practice in US?

I should be grateful if you could let me have your advice off-the-list and thank you for the band width in this mail reflector.

I got many useful replies for my OT questions off-the-list.  Thank you very much for all your advice.  This email reflector is extremely resourceful.

Hello Johnny, sorry to hear of your recent product failure. I'll respond here because the product you ordered (https://www.aspectsolar.com/products_EnergyBar_250.aspx) may have applications for other Elecraft users. Your experience may not be typical of their quality assurance program.

AspectSolar has chosen Aircraft Spruce as their International Distributer (https://www.aspectsolar.com/Contact_Us-@-worldwide.aspx), as AS has a good reputation in the aircraft community for product sales and support. Aircraft Spruce likely has the technology and staff infrastructure to serve customers outside the USA. I've spent many $ over the years buying aircraft products from them, and other vendors as well. I have no experience with defective merchandise and Aircraft Spruce, however.

While some vendors (notably Elecraft) go well beyond normal practice in serving their customer's needs, it's not typical practice for vendors to automatically assume shipping costs. It can depend upon the situation.

Nobody but Elecraft in my experience has helped 100% with service and shipping to KL7 in special circumstances. Most USA customers outside KL7 or KH6 get free shipping when orders exceed a certain amount. We usually pay additional fees to Alaska.

I'd contact AspectSolar directly with a request for their usual practice regarding their return of defective merchandise. They may help, they may not, but it's worth an attempt.

Thanks, Gary.  The energybar 250 should be a very well design battery pack that can be brought on plane though mine was defective on arrival.  I intend to get it for my CPAP machine as well as field use of my elecraft radios.

I got a number of useful replies including yours and would like to thank all the helping hands.
