I left all that behind in 1979 when I moved north. Better luck
finding such property here in Alaska. I moved from LA to a town of 75 at the end of a 16-mile dead-end gravel road. I harvested 17,000 board feet of FREE timber for my self-built two-story log house (USFS land). Firewood was just go get it - no permits! Where I currently live, about 100 miles west of that little town, there is no city gov't, no building permits, no convenants, no zoning, nada! I put up my two 50-foot towers and a 16-foot dish, built a 12x40 foot shed, installed a six dog kennel for my sled dogs, and installed a back driveway without intervention by gov't. Not likely I will ever move back to "America". Can't afford to. Got no state income or sales tax. No property tax for seniors. And the state gives both of us checks just to live here (Alaska Permanent Fund). A hot day is 70F! Never have to water the lawn. We paid $170K for our 3-bed, 2-bath 12-year old home on 1-3/4 acres. shhhhh - I didn't tell you! 73, Ed - KL7UW ------------------- You got that right! It's becoming almost impossible to find a new home without CC&Rs. We're planning a final move in the next few years, possibly to KH6-land. My two challenges to the realtor: no CC&Rs and no HOA. 73 de Jim - AD6CW 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com [hidden email] "Kits made by KL7UW" ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Wow! My young wife wants us to move to Alaska. Are you "homesteading" on
that USFS land? How far do you have to drive your sled dogs to get supplies? Are there any downsides to living in Alaska? Can I get broadband Internet service in the wilderness? Are you snowed in during the winter? Ancient minds want to know the downside because I can only afford to move once more at my age. My wife has timber harvesting, animal husbandry skills, and we both know how to garden. Oh, do I need an exit visa from the lower forty-eight? 73 de AC8NS Hop ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edward R Cole" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2013 9:01 PM Subject: [Elecraft] OT: no CC&Rs and no HOA >I left all that behind in 1979 when I moved north. Been a nice summer this year with temps up into the 70's; shirtsleeve
wx. Sorry the igloo melted better get a tent - really? Lots of misinformation (myths) about Alaska as a frozen wasteland. So don't move up here - it's uncrowded and too quiet - you would not like it - stay in LA, SF, Chicago or NYC. I should have locked the gate when I arrived 34-years ago :-) 73, Ed - KL7UW At 10:55 PM 7/16/2013, Gary Gregory wrote: >Take warm jacket.... > >:-) > >Gary > >On 17 July 2013 16:09, Hop - AC8NS ><<mailto:[hidden email]>[hidden email]> wrote: >Wow! We've been to Anchorage and Fairbanks twice now. In the summer, both
were beautiful. I couldn't get over finishing dinner at 10 PM at the Pump House Restaurant and walking out to full daylight. Boaters were all over the Chena River, like it was the middle of the day. We both grew up in Michigan, but left the midwest right after college. But, unfortunately, after 38 years in the sun, I get cold if the temperature drops below 60F. It's depressing here when we lose DST and it's completely dark at 5 PM. I have a good friend in Anchorage - Jim, AL7FS. We always make it a point to visit when we're in town. After living in good-sized cities all of our lives, it was amazing to go out to Delta Junction and hear nothing but nature. Definitely a treat after the overpopulated LA area. 73 de Jim - AD6CW On 7/16/2013 6:01 PM, Edward R Cole wrote: > I left all that behind in 1979 when I moved north.
