P3 hookup

Mike Reublin
I've got a P3 coming, and just downloaded the manual. If I understand
correctly from the diagram on p 13, the RS232 path is Computer--->P3--->K3.

Currently I have a "y" cable plugged into the K3. The cable from the
'puter plugs into one leg of that, and the other leg goes to the SteppIR
control box.

Do I leave that where it is?

Re: P3 hookup

Hi Mike,

Think of the leg of the Y cable that goes to the K3 as the Elecraft leg. Take the cable that now goes to the K3 and move it to the P3. Then take the short serial cable supplied with the P3 and connect it between the P3 and the K3.

The SteppIR controller should be looking for IF auto-info "responses"
containing frequencies from the K3.  The P3 passes these through its serial
interface from the K3 to the computer side.

There is additional "private traffic" between the P3 and K3; very likely the
SteppIR controller is smart enough to ignore that chitchat.

The serial connection between the P3 and K3 is always 38400 bps (and the P3
firmware should set this speed automatically).

The serial speed between your Computer and P3 is whatever you set the P3 to.
Most computer software (and your StepIR) see the P3/K3 combination as a K3,
even though the computer serial cable is connected first to the P3.

If the SteppIR controller needs to be at a speed other than 38400, you'll
need to put it on the computer side of the P3.

Real experience (or info from SteppIR) should trump my theoretical opinion
here: I don't have a SteppIR controller.

Thanks, Mike.

Just to make sure my age fuzzed brain got it:

The "Y" stays where it is, plugged into the K3. The cable from the
computer moves from that to the P3, then the shorty goes from the P3 to
the "Y".

In reply to this post by Mike Reublin
Mike,

That will work ONLY if the SteppIR can listen in on 38400 bps traffic.
If it needs any other speed, then you must put the "Y" on the P3.

Check the data speeds that the SteppIR will handle.

Hi Mike,

That is not correct. Please reread my response. Keep in mind that the P3 has two RS232 ports on it. One port from the computer and one port to the K3.

If you wait until you get the P3 and its manual in your hands you'll see that it is really quite simple. Everything you need is contained in the box.

Re: P3 hookup

Alan Bloom
In reply to this post by Mike Reublin
It should work either way, but it would be better to put the SteppIR "Y"
RS-232 cable on the PC side of the P3 instead of the K3 side.  As Dick
mentioned, then you aren't limited to 38400 baud.  And also there is
less traffic on that side, which may be less confusing to the SteppIR.

BTW, I will be getting a SteppIR antenna here at N1AL soon so I can try
it out myself.

The older SteppIR controller can only handle up to 19200 bps. That speed
must be manually configured in all three devices - the SteppIR
controller, the computer and the P3 - and the SteppIR controller MUST be
connected at the INput of the P3 (NOT to the K3)

The connection between the P3 and the K3 will always be automatically
reconfigured to 38400 bps (regardless of the manual configuration
setting in the K3) so an older SteppIR controller cannot read the
traffic at this speed.

The newer SteppIR SDA-100 controller can handle 38400 bps so it could be
connected to either the K3 or the P3, but again this speed must be
manually configured in all three devices.

I wonder if that's dependent on the chip. I have one of the old style
with the upgrade chip and it ranges from 2400 to 57600.

OK, Mike. I did re-read it and I still am not sure what you mean. The
phrase that's throwing me is

"leg of the Y cable that goes to the K3 as the Elecraft leg"

Presently I have a "Y" (from SteppIR). One of the arms goes to the
SteppIR, one to the K3. The "stem" of the "Y" has a female DB9 that
acccepts the cable from the computer.

I have the manual. That's what prompted the question.

Anyhow, it'll be here in a couple of days, and like you say, that'll
make it clear.

Re: P3 hookup

Don Wilhelm-4
Mike,

Make it simple - put the "Y" cable at the P3 -- The short cable that
comes with the P3 connects between the P3 and the K3.
Set the baud rate at the P3, computer and SteppIR controller to the same
value.
Job done.

The one I originally used must have been a very early model, then,
because that definitely was 19200 max. With my present SDA-100,
everything can be set to 38400.

Re: P3 hookup

Alan,

I have the SmallIR and will confirm what a wonderful experience it is to
use.  We get what we pay for. The quality is excellent.  I will save these
directions for future use.  Right now I don't have the interface in the
original Steppir controller.

It should work either way, but it would be better to put the SteppIR "Y"
RS-232 cable on the PC side of the P3 instead of the K3 side.  As Dick
mentioned, then you aren't limited to 38400 baud.  And also there is less
traffic on that side, which may be less confusing to the SteppIR.

BTW, I will be getting a SteppIR antenna here at N1AL soon so I can try it
out myself.
