PC laptop for K3/KX3 digital modes

Dave Moorman
Hello, All -

I’d like to get the K3 and KX3 on HF digital and am wondering if anyone can recommend a reasonably priced PC laptop which would do that.  My experience has been only Macintosh so the PC laptop world is unknown territory.  A decent keyboard and a trackpad are pretty essential, but that’s about the only hard-and-fast requirements.

Another question; I have an older iBook G3 on which I’m attempting to install Linux.  Has anyone done that?

Thanks,

Dave  K9SW

I use my iPad for my KX3 with an iMic plus a Logitech iPad speaker that
clips on it works ok for those modes and a logging program.

Dave,

If you are looking for an economy laptop, I would steer you to the
refurbished IBM laptops.  They are typically priced at $240 and up
loaded with Windows 7 professional.  See
http://www-304.ibm.com/shop/americas/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/default/CategoryDisplay?categoryId=2576396&storeId=1&catalogId=-840.

I have had good success with the IBM/Lenovo computers - they just keep
on running, but then I normally use only desktops, the laptop is only
for infrequent travel purposes.

Re: PC laptop for K3/KX3 digital modes

Frank Precissi
I just use a cheap netbook made by ASUS.  Works well, sips battery, and
doesn't cost an arm and a leg if I drop it and it breaks.

Make sure you buy a decent USB soundcard like the Griffin iMic for the best
results.  Built in sound cards work, but a lot of times they lead to more
problems then they are worth.

Dave,
Almost any PC will work so long as it has a sound card. All of the digital software readily available will run on some minimal machines. I would look for one that is running Windows XP or Windows7.

There are just a few questions that you will need to answer. One, is how much do I want to invest, and two, how many simulataneous applications do I plan to run. If you are going to run only FLDIGI, MIXW, DIGIPAN, etc, you only need something low end. I usually steer away from Apple and Linux as Apple just want too much money for their stuff and both have a limited supply of apps to play with as compared to the PC.

I'm picky about keyboards.  My netbook has an awful keyboard -- my mistake.

Otherwise, look at battery life if you want to operate portable.

For the last 10-15 years all I have bought are Dells both Desktops and
Laptops from the Outlet Store. They can be returns, Discontinued, Scratch &
Dent, new ones that have been exchanged. Excellent Warranty!!! I have 3 for
the shack and 4 laptops, my wife has one of each also as does my Grandson
for when he comes over.

I recently bought a Clam Shell Case for my iPad that gives it a regular
raised keyboard and with its battery can power the iPad for about 100+ hrs
continuous use or 6 mo standby. The case is all aluminum and lightweight.
But still keeps the iPad small in size the case is amazing in all it does,
but a bit pricey.

I found several Dell refurbished D620's a while back at the local GOODWILL store.  New bat, and warranty on HD and computer.  About $225.

Love mine.  Added memory after warranty ran out and also upgraded to larger solid state HD.  Used for many club outings, FDs and personal activities.

Dave,

If you have Mac experience and still have a Mac, you should use it. The
Mac is a very stable platform for Windows when you run Windows under
VMWare Fusion on an Intel based Mac.

If you have a Mac (I have a MacBook Air) you can also run windows under a free (as in free beer) virtualization program from Oracle called VirtualBox.  It is mostly open source.  I use it to run XP and Win7 and Ubuntu on my Mac.  The virtual machine files are not large.  It works very well.

Re: PC laptop for K3/KX3 digital modes

I would NOT suggest using XP anymore.  Software companies will no longer
offer their support when Microsoft drops it next April (2014).  If the
software of your choice works, you win.  If it doesn't, you're on your own.

Win7 is stable, usable and is supported.  It is also fairly familiar (except
some folders are in different places per Microsoft [apparent] upgrade
policy).

And after a couple days exposure to Win8 - the interface SUX!  It's the new
Vista.  Avoid it like the plague until they fix it.  Nothing is where it
should be.

Re: PC laptop for K3/KX3 digital modes

Lots of good advice here.

Win7 is a good choice if you can get it on new laptops.  It’s not always available anymore and Win8 is a PIA.
One thing I didn’t see mentioned and it probably a good indication of adequate performance is to get a laptop with Wireless N capability.  These days, some lower end laptops still do not come with this.  Spend a little more and you won’t regret it.
For example the used IBM’s Don mentions theres some at $250 and some at 295.  The ones at 295 have wireless N networking adapters.

I am in the process of upgrading my XP computers to Win7 in anticipation
of the April 2014 "drop dead date".  With a home network of 8 computers
and a NAS fileserver, it is not an overnight task.  All computers must
talk to each other on the network.

I will end up with a couple of the computers running some version of
Linux to save the cost of additional copies of Win7 OS, and I am glad to
report that after 3 years of aborted attempts, I have finally found a
workable configuration file for Samba that will allow a Linux computer
to work on my home network.

BTW, I have been recommending the use of Spectrogram for the Dial
Calibration and filter alignment of the K2 (and K1), and am happy to
report that it will run just fine under the most recent version of Wine.

Those "stuck" with Windows 8 can downgrade to Win 7 at no cost.  I do
not know all the details, but I have read several reports that say it is
possible.  It may require that you have a Win 7 DVD. Check Microsoft for
better information.

In addition to all the PC suggestions, FLDIGI and cocoaModem
work on Mac OS and support a bunch of digital modes. RUMlog and
RUMped are decent logging programs.

It is also possible to run Windows directly on Mac hardware.
Apple makes high quality hardware and I have met people who run
Windows on MacBook computers because they want to take advantage
of the hardware and don't like Mac OS.

Re: PC laptop for K3/KX3 digital modes

Edward R Cole
In reply to this post by Dave Moorman
For desktop PC I have bought DELL for a decade using win200pro, XP
and been very satisfied.  I currently run a five year old duo-core
2.33 GHz, 3Mb memory, XP32 SP3 as my main computer for digital
modes.  If support is eventually dropped for XP that will only affect
safe connection to internet.  It will run independent of internet as
long as you are happy with sw that is supported by XP.  Some digital
modes require accurate computer time which is easy from
internet.  But GPS time can be an alternative if internet connection
is not safe.

I have two latops: one old IBM thinkpad with win95 that never
connects to internet and mainly runs two applications (one
DOS-based).  I have a  2009 Dell laptop that came with Vista (which I
hated); I upgraded to win8pro and it took a month of help from a ms
engineer to get it installed (original DVD would not accept its
key-code for install and I had to transfer to a memory stick and ISO
loader.  So it runs but will not take any upgrades (another bug in
the sw).  Auto upgrades fail to install and win8 then auto removes
the upgrade (takes over 30-minutes).  Then it gets another auto
upgrade and repeats the whole deal again.  So mostly I run it with my
SDR-IQ disconnected from internet.

At work I bought a 2009 Lenovo (who took over the IBM Thinkpad line)
and was very happy with it.  The Thinkpad is the only laptop which
was birdie free on VHF (they use a metal case).  Had to leave this
computer when I retired.

My wife has a ipad-3 which she is happy with (plus has a twin to my
Dell desktop) and a older IBM thinkpad (she has just resumed use for
doing the budget - does not connect to internet).

If you can find a win7 computer I think I would go with that and wait
out upgrading until the next generation of windows.  Seems every
other upgrade from ms is OK.

Everyone is allowed their own opinion! Mine differs  from Rick's
significantly. I have been running Win 8.0 and now 8.1 and find it to be
very stable and convenient to use. In my opinion MS DOES NOT need to fix
anything because it runs very smooth. I think what folks complain about is
our natural resistance to CHANGE and yes, Win 8.x produced 'change', but
once you get past the media comments about how awful the user interface is,
one can adapt quite easily. It is true that when Mr. Ford first produced a
car, resistance was rampart, BUT look around you now!! I run N1MM Logger,
YPlog, RBN, Skimmer, CW-Tune-In, VE7CC, and any other program I wish under
Win 8.1 and have had no issues with it.

Nothing is where it
should be.

I would look for one that is running Windows XP or Windows7.
