PR6 ctrl line

Joe K2UF
I have an Elecraft molded cable between the K3 and KPA500 acc ports.  Can I
use a VGA 'Y' splitter to connect the PR6 ctrl  wire to the acc connector on
the K3?  I found one on the inet that says it is wired thru except for pin
9.  the male end of the Elecraft acc cable has pin 9 (and others) cut off.

Any ideas?

Joe K2UF

With enough THRUST pig fly just fine.

Re: PR6 ctrl line

Cady, Fred
Hi Joe,
I didn't see a response to your good question, so here goes one:
Yes you can use a standard 15-pin Y-cable splitter to split out signals you need, for example the DIGOUT1 for switching on the PR6 or to input FSK keying signals to the K3. The key thing is to make sure the cable between one side of the splitter cable to the KPA is the KPAK3AUX cable.

You won't be able to use the splitter you found that is missing pin 9 as that is the BAND 2 data that the KPA uses to determine which band the K3 is on.

I've had good luck with cables from www.winford.com. They also have a neat line of break-out boards for 9-pin and 15-pin cables. (I don't have anything to do with the company, but even if I did so what?)

If you are going to add the KAT500 you can use a full 15-pin cable between the KAT and the KPA as long as the KPAK3AUX cable is between the K3 and the KAT.

Cheers and 73,

Cady, Fred
One more thing, make sure you get the DB15HD (should be DE15HD, but that is a losing battle) cable that has three rows of pins.
Cheers,
Fred

Re: PR6 ctrl line

Jim Wiley
Thank you, Fred.  And as you well know, there is no such thing as a
"DB9" connector, it is a DE9.  But, as you say, that looks like a fight
against a rising tide.

I have to fight this battle again and again when preparing questions for
license exams, and we constantly get complaints from the field, and
frankly from people who should know better, that we have made an error
in the pools.  Sigh!

Maybe someday enough people will get the word.

The proper splitter is available from:
   www.cablewholesale.com  p/n 10H1-27708
   www.altex.com   Philmore 70-568

Splitters from both sources are "all 15" and the same as the splitter
included with the KPA3AUX cable kit or the E980190 "Extra DB15 Y-cable"
listed with the KPA500 and K3.
