I plan to try the SSB QSO party next weekend, and have the adapter for the K3 and a Heil headset – but I need a remote PTT switch with a ¼ inch mono plug on one end and a pushbutton switch at the other. All I have been able to find online are nurse call buttons – which I suppose would work but the big red cross on the button is off-putting, and because they are made for use in a hospital environment they are expensive. Anyone suggest a source?

I rolled my own.
Normally open push button switch built into an old 35mm film container a hunk of RG-174 coax and a 1/4 inch jack. You could spend a ridiculous amount of money and get the official Heil switch which was built into a pistol grip. R. I rolled my own using a small microswitch from my junk box. No larger than a couple of sugar cubes. A little shrink tubing to cover exposed terminals. Cost almost nothing and works better than any other I have used. Force to operate is small so no fatigue.

I have tried hand switches and always found the need to use that hand also, Darn. So I built up a simple foot switch with a "hinge" Yes a door hinge and put a micro switch on the bottom with a simple flexible cable about 10' long to the radio. KISS and not bulky.

Ted,
Get a round body pushbutton switch, then look around for something to contain it which feels comfortable in your hand - the cap from a Sharpie marker or the body of a fat ballpoint pen come to mind. Drill a hole in the far end if there is not sufficient opening to pass the wires, and put whatever plug on it that fits your transceiver PTT jack. If the pushbutton does not stay with friction, glue it in with E6000 cement, or epoxy or whatever works to keep it in place. If you don't have such materials available, the cost is much smaller than buying a commercial pushbutton PTT switch. The switch and 1/4 inch plug can be found at Mouser - choose economy shipping unless you have other parts to order. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/7/2018 1:38 PM, Dauer, Edward wrote: > Neat idea; thanks for sharing. > > But a 35 mm film canister? Ed;
It is easier than fabricating switch bodies. Mouser has several candidates - look at their 502-ED903. It is a nice hand-held switch in a comfortable case, costing about $12. Add wire and appropriate plug (mine has a phono plug for the K3) and you can build a very nice PTT switch for less than $20. They also have a new assembly with cable attached for a bit more - something like $160. I don;’t recommend that… - Jack, W6FB > On Jan 7, 2018, at 9:57 AM, Dauer, Edward <[hidden email]> wrote: > > I plan to try the SSB QSO party next weekend, and have the adapter for the K3 and a Heil headset – but I need a remote PTT switch with a ¼ inch mono plug on one end and a pushbutton switch at the other. I use my old J-38 straight key wired to a RCA plug that goes into the PTT jack on the rear of the K3. The advantage is that you don't have to pick it up to use it or put it down to type. Easy to wire up too. Buy an audio cable, lop off one connector, dress the leads out and connect them to the key binding posts.
BTW, have you considered using VOX in the contest? Completely hands free. I've had a Boss FS-5U for many years. Intended for various music applications, sustain for digital piano, triggering sounds, etc. they're very durable and about $29. The chassis is an aluminum extrusion which is keyed so you can attach multiple together.

Thanks for this idea. I prefer a foot switch, and I've already had one
of the Heil switches die on me in less than 2 years of use. Right now I'm using one I got from Radiodan.com. The owner is a member of my club, and I bought it at our annual HamFest. It looks to be of decent quality, but I don't know his source. Anyway, if this one dies, I am definitely going to try a sustain pedal. They typically have a switch which switches the operation from on/off to a variable resistance (depending on what you are using it for). It should work fine for PTT operation in the on/off mode, and they are fairly rugged. I may have to try it soon just to see how one would feel in actual operation. 73, John AC0ZG On 1/7/2018 1:01 PM, Alan wrote: > If you don't want to build something, check out a music store. 40 years ago, I found a foot pedal for an early IBM Dictaphone at a flea
market. It has a switch in it that allowed the stenographer to press either side to go backwards or forward when typing the recorded dictation. I wired both sides together so pressing either side completed the circuit. It is 4' x 4", made of metal, heavy and has been in use for 40 years. A slight correction - that would have been a foot pedal from the IBM
"Executary" line. Dictaphone was another competing company. Yes, that is a heavy duty footswitch. I also use one for PTT. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/8/2018 7:02 AM, [hidden email] wrote: > 40 years ago, I found a foot pedal for an early IBM Dictaphone at a flea > market. When I used "dictaphone", I was referring to the function of the machine, not the company name.
