Panadaptor for the KX3

Has anyone tried using Rocky (VE3NEA, freeware) with the I/Q output from
a KX3, for a $0 panadaptor? I'm stimulated to ask this by the
panadaptor article in the current QST, which strikes me as a ludicrous
example of doing things the hard way.

Hi Pete

I have been using ROCKY as a panadapter on my KX3 along with the iMic stereo USB sound adaptor. I find they help during a contest and in finding QSOs on a dead band. I recently added the NaP3 software to my station. ROCKY and NaP3 serve two different purposes in my station but the one advantage to ROCKY is it keeps the serial connection free to use with the N3FJP logging program during a contest. The NaP3 software allows many good things to happen such as frequency display on the computer screen, Clicking the mouse to jump to the frequency of a displayed signal, Copy RTTY, PSK or CW to a box on the screen, Program 16 F keys to control or send messages to the KX3, turn on the SUB receiver and let you listen to the SUB receiver on your computer sound card. Both these programs are free and they can both be on the computer but can not run at the same time. The only caution I have with either program is the sound card must support stereo and the 16 bit, 48 khz 2 channel option mus
t be selected for that sound card in the operating system.

Rocky has been my "go to" application for my homebrew SDR uses for many years. While it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of other applications, it has the best frequency domain display available, it is rock solid, and for homebrew use, it can control an si570 through the I2C bus with the addition of a couple of chips. I use it with my KX3 to monitor the output of newly built SDR transmitters, as well as rebuilt boat anchor transmitters until I am sure they are working properly. For the $0 price, I have not found an application that can give me as much information about the signal quality as Rocky.

I am not sure which article in QST you are talking about. Be careful, it is the April issue, and QST editors are known for their spoofs!
