Plexiglas case for K2

Doug Shields
Hello all,
I wanted to show off my K2 at the recent Melbourne hamfest.  But, I
didn't want a lot of people poking around inside my radio.  So I decided to
make some transparent plastic cover panels for the radio.  It took about 10
hours to make everything fit.  Anyone that is good with plastics could do it
much faster but I was learning.
I think it turned out really good.  I got a lot of comments about it at
the hamfest.  If you want to show off your workmanship you might give it a
try.  I haven't tried operating the rig with the plastic covers on but I am
sure it would be shooting RF out everywhere.
The links below will take you to some photos of the radio.

Excellent idea Doug if you want to show to people the work labor you did
!!!! But I think it will not be a good idea to use it for TX....

Excellent job, Doug.  Fantastic detail with the plexiglass.
What's to hurt transmitting with it as QRP.  Go for it.

Beautiful job! I'd be very surprised if there were any RFI issues, at least
a far as radiating RF, and probably not in terms of picking up unwanted RF.
The toroids are self-shielding and the PCB construction keeps everything
close and the "leads" (PCB traces) carrying RF short.

Doug,

They belong at the top of Elecraft's gallery.

I thought only of using glue to make a plexiglass
enclosure for my chess set (so that the cats don't
spoil it).  I have the pieces cut - now I'll try
to use screws as you seem to have.  Thanks.

RE: Plexiglas case for K2

Ron D'Eau Claire-2
I'd like to pass along an off-reflector comment Wayne made to me after I
wrote that there probably wouldn't be any RFI issues:

He wrote:

"Uh.... don't I wish  :)

Without the case, you'll see significantly more leakage radiation both
out of and into the box. It varies a lot, but the box really helps, for
everything below Microwave frequencies. Those can sneak in sideways.

But at QRP levels and in isolated situations, he'd be perfectly OK."

So there you have the "word" from the man himself about operating with the
plastic covers. Of course, the standards (and needs) of RF shielding have
grown considerably since I ran half a kilowatt on 20 meters using a rig
built on a sheet of masonite <G>. So has the sensitivity to RF energy of the
stuff we have in our homes and shacks. Back then I'd never dreamed that a CW
QSO might be interrupted briefly by the "krick, krick, krick, brrrrr..." of
the data from my cell phone updating the local cell tower sneaking into the
K2 audio channel.

Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to fire it up QRP when it's being displayed
for people although I'd keep the metal covers on it for normal operation in
the shack.

It IS a beautiful display job, worth of recognition! And, from what I can
see of the boards, a build worthy of being displayed!
