Polar Bear #1 Needs Help!

WA3WSJ
Hello all!

I'm looking for a way to take my camcorder tape
(mini-DV)and put it on a DVD or CD. I then need
some sort of software package to edit the video
and sound.
I recorded Ron's, WB3AAL, and myself, WA3WSJ's
hike up the mountain to Pulpit Rock etc. I now want
to create a video with sound. Anyone have any ideas?

Please response directly to me.

72,
Ed, WA3WSJ

RE: Polar Bear #1 Needs Help!

What's the term firewire mean?
I keep seeing this word when referring to video.
Do you think that if I record from my camcorder into
an external dvd recorder it will work? I plan to just
go out and buy a dvd recorder and input the video and
sound onto a dvd  from my camcorder. Then buy a software package for
WinXP to edit the dvd.

Does anyone have a better idea?

The DVD recorder should run me around $180. I have no idea what a
software editing package will cost.

Does someone make just an external DVD Recorder? All I see in the stores
are VHS/DVD Recorders. I plan to edit more videos etc for the
Polar Bears, AT hikes, ARCBS Events and ARLHS Events. It would be nice
to have a reasonably priced video recording studio in my shack.

One thing I forgot to mention in my last email:  Don't get one of the
devices in the $50 to $100 class that  plug into a PC with USB, and
take the video and audio out of the camcorder.  They work, but the
quality is terrible in comparison to what you'd get with going
directly into a PC with firewire, or into a digital DVD recorder with
firewire.

RE: Polar Bear #1 Needs Help!

Dan Barker
Using the camera's digital to analog curcuitry will work, if quality and
editing are not factors. Usually, one buys a firewire card (or has firewire
built in to the computer), and downloads the video as a digital file (Huge,
about 15G/hour) to the workstation. Then, all the NLE (Non Linear Editing)
is done, transitions and words are added, and a sound track massaged/added.
When the final product is ready, only then will you go to analog for
display. If the final media is digital (EG Email, CD, DVD-Rom), the movie
can stay digital. Only going to VCR or a TV Monitor would you ever need to
convert it to an analog signal. There are quality issues only.

Dan

Oh yes, Firewire is just another networking tool. Parallel, Ethernet,
Serial, USB, Firewire. They all do the same thing, but at different speeds.
Firewire is slang for IEEE 1394 and runs about 400 Mbps. It used to be 4
times the speed of Ethernet. Now, with Gigabit Ether, it's 0.4 times the
speed.

You might want to get the Sony  DV Direct unit. Fry's sell them for $229 and
it comes with all the software you might need.  I assume you have a digital
camcorder but even if you don't the Sony unit has analog to Digital
conversion built it so you can even transfer vcr tapes to dvd.  Overall
probably the least expensive and most efficient way to do what you want to
do.

Re: Polar Bear #1 Needs Help!

Lambs, Dick & Judy

Firewire, also known as IEEE 1394, is just a port--like USB--that's
on most new computers.  If your computer doesn't have one, you can
buy a card with the port on it to put in your PC.  You can get them
for around $20 to $30, although it's possible to pay a lot more.
You'll also need a firewire cable to connect between your camera and
the PC.  Those also range tremendously in price--from $5 to as much
as $50.  But it's worth going the firewire route, as you lose a lot
of quality transferring video any other way.   This is true whether
you're transferring to a PC or to an external stand-alone DVD
recorder intended primarily for use with TV sets.

Most XP PCs have software on them, in the accessories package, for
doing the transfer and simple editing.  If not, there's freeware and
also commercial packages for as little as $20.

Does anyone have a experience with the Sony VRD-VC20 DVD recording Unit?
It looks like it would work great and I don't have to tie up
my computer to burn video dvds. The price is just over $215
or so for a new oneand it comes with Nero Software to edit with a
computer or something like that. It also does DV, VCR, etc.

Hi Ed,

If I were you, I would get a DVD burner drive for your computer rather
than an external recorder (which I presume is similar to a VCR, only
using
DVD blanks instead of videotapes).  The prices have really come down
lately -- I think about $40 is the going rate.  Using computer hardware

and video editing software is definitely a more powerful and flexible,
and
probably cheaper, combination than some all-in-one device.  Although I
would grant that an all-in-one device would be quicker to learn.

I also use my DVD burner to burn DVDs of TV shows recorded on my TiVo
DVR,
but that's a whole 'nother story...
