Poor man's pan adapter

Fellow Elecraft enthusiasts,

I just ordered the SoftRock Lite from Tony, KB9YIG, below. I would like to be able to observe whatever bandwidth I can around any band I am working on my K-3. Since this appears to be a compromise over the "Pan Adapter" that is available for ~$300, per Tony's suggestion I wonder if any of you have successfully tried this? And how does it work? FYI, I have an HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook PC, AMD Turion X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00 GHz, 2.00 GB Memory, 32 Bit Op System, with Vista.

Not sure which sound card is built in. Driver is Conexant High Definition Smart Audio 221, if that helps.

Hi Ron,

The IF output of the K3 may be connected to a "K3 IF" version of the SoftRock Lite to get a view of signals in the IF passband. The K3 IF Lite II kit is $12 and the unit has a center frequency of about 8.190 MHz. With 48 kHz soundcard sample rate the IF band coverage would be +/-24 kHz around the Lite II center frequency.

It might be well to ask on the Elecraft reflector if any have had success using the SoftRock Lite with the K3. I have sold many such kits but can't say I have ever gotten a report on how it has worked out for people.

Ron,

I have not completed it yet, but the Softrock can make a good
panadapter. Be aware that the Softrock by itself does have local
oscillator leakage and can feed back into the K3 IF if connected
directly. An isolation amplifier is needed in addition to the Softrock
receiver. Jack Smith of Clifton Labs has a Z10000 kit that will do the

Ron,

I'm not familiar with the Conexant audio device. However, many laptops do not have a stereo input such as a Line In. The microphone input is usually mono. You are going to need the stereo/line-in input in order to have the SDR work correctly. If you don't have such an input on your laptop you will need an external USB audio adapter. I am using the SoundBlaster X-Fi USB with my HP laptop.

As a side note, I have added the Clifton Labs buffer amplifier (X-10000 ?) to my K2 and am using one of the SoftRock Lites tailored for the K2 for a panadaptor. Yes, I realize that the K2 doesn't provide an IF output, but I found that a K2-owner in Germany had tapped in to the K2 IF and had published the description (in German, naturally). I think I have a translation of the article around here somewhere if anyone is interested.

If you are going to extract an IF sample out of the K2, the Z10000
buffer amplifier can be installed inside the K2 with the internal
installation option. This provides a convenient IF output with bandpass
filtering, protected against short circuits on the IF sample port
connector and with excellent isolation--around 100 dB reverse gain when
installed according to the instructions provided with the Z10000 kit.

As Dave mentioned, I run softrock panadapters for both my K3 and K2.

They're cheap but work very well. I have a Clifton Labs Z10000 bufferamp between the softrock and the K3 (both are mounted within the same Altoids tin). I'm using a Delta 44 soundcard and 96KHz sampling rate.

I simply followed the very detailed instructions on the Clifton Labs web site: http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com

You have to be able to work with surface mount components for both boards. Within a few weeks I got the kits from Clifton Labs/Tony Parks and with minimal effort was up and running.

On the downside I currently have 2 mirror image and a one centre noise spikes on-screen. I can't seem to get rid of them, but apart from that most of the spectrum is useable. I can see signals that I can barely hear on the K3. There is no K3 rx noise evident when the softrock is attached to the KXV3.

My main useage is the following:
1) Monitoring for a band opening.
2) During each contact in a contest (search and pounce), I find it helps to look where the next station is. This prevents me tuning over him when I've finished the current contact and he isn't transmitting any more.

Jack,

I'm glad that you have instructions for adding the Z10000 to the K2,
because I looked around and couldn't find my translation of the German
instructions. By the way, the setup works just fine but I don't use it
too much. I'm waiting hopefully for the K2 version of LP-Bridge (?) so
that the frequency of the K2 would be shown on the PowerSDR scale. Any
news on LP-Bridge?

Jack and Ron,

Sorry, but I was thinking about one thing and talking about another. I
had also made some modifications to my K2 to allow me to drive a
PTC-IIusb pactor modem. That modification is the one that was
originally done by a German ham. So I was thinking about the pactor
modification when talking about the panadapter modification. My only
excuse is that my aging mind is easily confused.

Jack, question: Do you plan to offer an LP-Bridge program for the K2?

The hardware is available to order now, and the LP-Bridge support for
the reduced command set of the K2 will be ready in a few weeks. If you
plan to order, use the standard order buttons and add a note that it's
for K2.
