I was thinking that it would be nice to have a menu selection that would allow you to select a power output by mode. This would enable those that use an amp to easily switch modes Ex. SSB requiring slightly higher drive power and CW requiring a lower drive level. We already have a menu option that allows one to select power output by band. What does everyone think of this?

There already is a feature that allows you to set the SSB level slightly
higher than that of the CW output. Why run an amp in anything but hi voltage position? i.e., SSB switch. In fact Alpha advised me directly to always run in hi voltage position. Life is too short.... etc. Charles Harpole [hidden email] > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Possible added K3 feature > From: [hidden email] > To: [hidden email] > Date: Fri, 15 Aug 2008 20:26:18 -0700 > CC: [hidden email] > > There already is a feature that allows you to set the SSB level slightly > higher than that of the CW output. > > On Fri, 2008-08-15 at 19:06 -0700, N8XPQ wrote: >> I was thinking that it would be nice to have a menu selection that would >> allow you to select a power output by mode. If you are that will make your SSB output greater than your CW output and if you are setting the drive to show 1500w on average in both modes you will be transmitting at an illegal power on SSB. Leave them both the same and you will have the same PEAK output in both modes, which is what is the legal setting on SSB and CW. To prove this, if you have a monitor scope, observe the PEAK output on both modes and you will see that the CW PEAK and the SSB PEAK are the same when you set the drive with CW, unless your mic gain is too low. If the mic gain is too low, don't adjust the drive, adjust the mic gain until the peak output on the scope is the same for SSB as it is on CW. The reason that some older amps have a lower voltage
for CW is because when the amp was built the limit for power was 1,000 watts DC INPUT instead of the current level. For an amp to get to 1,000 watts DC on SSB and not exceed it for CW either low drive or lower voltage was needed. Good power output meters that hams could afford are products of the last 20 years or so.
