Power?

Jimmy Lee-4
My K2 has the KAT2 and when I adjust the power to 5 watts I will get from 3 to 6 watts (varies with the band) on the internal power meter.  Is this normal and if not what can I do?

RE: Power?

Yes, my K2's power output wasn't all that stable either.  Power would
shift around by more than I was comfortable with.  When I went to the
100 watt power module, I'd see power jump from 70 to 100 watts and back.

Turns out there is a side effect of the rig's design where the rig's
power control logic has the least resolution on 40 meters and you can
see some large jumps.  In my case the solution was to change the value
of one resistor.  I can't remember which R but I do remember I got it
wrong the first time (off by 10x) and the rig's power was waaaay down.
Once I got the right value in there, the rig has been much more stable.

It still jumps around a little, but so little as to not make any real
difference.

If you search the archives for K2 power fluctuation I bet you'll find
it.

Re: Power?

Don Wilhelm-4
The resistor to change is R98 on the bottom of the RF board - increase
the value.
How much it can be increased varys from one K2 to another - it will
never be greater than 1500 ohms, but some K2s can only increase it by a
few hundred ohms.

The best way to find the correct value for your K2 is to temporarily use
a variable resistor in place of R98 (use 2k for best results).  Increase
the resistance until the maximum power on 10 meters decreases.  When you
have found the setting that does not decrease the 10 meter maximum
output significantly, remove the variable resistor, measure it and
install the next lower standard value resistor.
