Well, everything went fairly well up to the part III alignment. I was able
to get slightly over 2 watts during the first few steps of the alignment. However during the next steps, I get higher current than I should, and the max out is about 5.5 watts even with the current cal set to 3.5 amps. 3 watts = 1.1 amp 4 watts = 1.8 amps 5 watts = 2.4 amps I have checked and swapped power supplies, changed power cords, and set current cal to 3.5 amps, but the max output seems to be about 5.5 watts. I get "Hi Current" indication even with the current cal set to 3.5. I would appreciate any insight, I have visually checked everything of course and don't see any obvious problem.. I looked at the troubleshooting section , but it seems pretty generic, I'm hoping someone might have run into this problem before and could point me to the right area to check...Any ideas? When using antenna my K2 doesn't give full output in 24MHz and 21 MHz (due to rf problems, I believe). When using dummy load, there is no problems. Make sure that the bandpass filters have been aligned carefully. Look at the trimmers; if they are at the limits of capacity (the little metal dot on the movable part is aligned with the pins), then maybe there's some problem which is preventing you from adjusting them to resonance. Make sure that the power supply voltage is not dropping under load. The K2 requires a good regulated power supply or well-charged battery, not a wall wart! -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I've read several good posts on your issue, but no one has mentioned this.
You report 5 watts at 2.4 amps, and a HIGH-CUR reading. If the current limit is 3.5 amps, you should get a HIGH-CUR annunciation at 3.5 amps, not at 2.4. In any post of this nature, the supply voltage will help a lot. A K2 happy to produce 15W at a reasonable current draw from 13.8 volts is going to be quite unhappy trying the same trick at 10.2 volts! What is your key-down voltage, current and power at the point you see the HIGH CUR warning? (Measure the voltage at the K2, not the supply in case it's a V=IR issue in the cabling. How are you measuring power? What sort of dummy load are you driving? I aligned the rest of the bandpass filters and took the following readings..
3750 - 2.38 amp 7100 - 2.14 amp 10100 - 1.70 amp 14100 - 1.26 amp 18100 - 1.10 amp 21100 - 1.18 amp 24900 - 1.14 amp 28200 - 1.12 amp As you can see the higher in frequency, the better the readings are. However, even on the higher frequencies, the max power output is about 6 to 7 watts.... Check T4 Gary says... gotta have the correct number of windings.. ok I check
it, double check it. and check it again... the correct number of windings....all is ok... oops!!!!!! holes 1 and 2 should be green windings and 3 and 4 should be white, just like I wrote in the book to make sure.... well, guess what, I had them reversed... after a little struggle to take out T4 and put it in correctly.... everything is fine now.. (at least the current part is ok) ..It remains to be seen what else I might have done... :) thanks for all the suggestions... T4 and that area was the area most folks pointed to.. 73 Tim NZ8J ----- Original Message ----- From: "NZ8J" <[hidden email]> To: "NZ8J" <[hidden email]>; <[hidden email]> Sent: Thursday, July 14, 2005 4:21 PM Subject: Additional info - Problems = Alignment Part III K2 #4993 > I aligned the rest of the bandpass filters and took the following readings.. > > 3750 - 2.38 amp > 7100 - 2.14 amp > 10100 - 1.70 amp > 14100 - 1.26 amp > 18100 - 1.10 amp > 21100 - 1.18 amp > 24900 - 1.14 amp > 28200 - 1.12 amp > > As you can see the higher in frequency, the better the readings are. > However, even on the higher frequencies, the max power output is about 6 > 7 watts.... > > Thanks > Tim > NZ8J > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "NZ8J" <[hidden email]> > To: <[hidden email]> > Sent: Thursday, July 14, 2005 12:17 PM > Subject: [Elecraft] Problems = Alignment Part III K2 #4993 > > > > Well, everything went fairly well up to the part III alignment.
