Man, I am a BELIEVER!
I was calling ZB2FK, who was 539 when all of a sudden the QRN went to 60/S-9. I mean PEGGED. I looked out the window of the shack and saw that we were having a hail storm. We're up at 8400' in the Rockies...I punched the NB and held it, adjusted it a bit and BAM! THE QRN WAS ABSOLUTELY G-O-O-O-O-O-N-E ! I mean gone-gone!!!! Never in my 45+ years of hamming have I heard snow static be just ELIMINATED!! WOW! WHAT A RIG! THAT WOULD BE THE K3 !! why do you think it has been rated #1 in the world by the main labs?

I've been wondering about potential receiver damage from rain and snow
static. I think if my QRN level from snow static went to +60 I would probably shut the rig off and disconnect it. Is such damage a real threat? If so, is there a certain safe QRN limit that should be observed, say s9+60 for 30 minutes, or whatever? 73, Drew AF2Z On Sun, 25 Oct 2009 16:49:32 -0600, you wrote: >Man, I am a BELIEVER! > >I was calling ZB2FK, who was 539 when all of a sudden the QRN went to 60/S-9. FWIW: The "usual suspects" again put Alpine County CA on the air in the CQP at the beginning of Oct. Our camp is at 8,400' in the Sierra Nevada, it's not uncommon to get snow, and we did this year. We were using a 765 Pro II, you could see the precip static on the baseline of the spectrum scope, and at one point, the Pro II quit. We had a spare, and later on in another snow squall, it quit. We finished up with an IC-706. My experience with snow static many years ago in the northern interior of AK is that what you hear [if anything] isn't what does in the front end of a radio. The charge will steadily build, tiny little leaks create the noise, and finally, the voltage is high enough to either arc over at the connector or inside the radio. The total charge [in coulombs] is very small and an RF choke or bleeder resistor across the antenna connector will keep the voltage to acceptable levels. I'm pretty sure the K3 has such a bleeder, not sure about my K2 and KX1. All bets are off however should a big spark from the sky land on your antenna. 73, Fred K6DGW Auburn CA ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
G'day,
Had quite a bit of snow static when I was in Antarctica. The protection bulb in the front end of the FT-101 used to glow gently. It survived the whole two years. Simple but it worked.
