RE:K7C

James T. "Jim" Rogers, W4ATK
It seems when you think things have reached some kind of summit and will
not get worse, I listened to some of the exchanges up on 20 RTTY. I will not
give the not so gentlemanly gent's name but his call sign would most
assuredly identify him and his language was gutter speak. Terrible
representation for our hobby. Some of these lids are so rabid, I believe
they would be capable of murder all in the interest of working a dx station.

Turning the radio off now. My wife often comes in to watch and listen. I
would not want her to hear or see.

Thank God for the ever humble CW ops I enjoy bumping into both here on the
Elecraft reflector and on the CW/QRP portions of the band. I can't think of a
single inconsiderate CW op I've worked in the last 3 years since I've been
active with my K2. My wife also often peeks at my notebook (or laptop) as I
record what I'm receiving on CW. In my 20 years as a ham radio operator, I've
often had to tune away from a SSB 'conversation' gone bad, but I've never once
had to choose whether or not to write something down in the midst of a CW
contact because it might offend me, my wife, or our kids.

Let's calm down this thread a bit and keep it focused away from operating habits
and lids. Reports of hearing and working them, how best to work them etc are OK.

ALSO: Please edit out the majority of copied text on your replies to postings.
I'm seeing a lot of postings with a ton of unnecessary text that takes up a lot
of room - especially for digest mode readers of the list.

A very good point! Not only removing the unneccessary parts of a
message you reply to is important, it is also very important NOT
to reply _atop_ the original message but _below_ it.
It's much easier to read the message when proper quiting was used,
even if one didn't follow the thread closely.

This following snippet from the Wikipedia article on this topic pretty
well illustrates the problem:

,----[ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top-posting ]---
| Because it messes up the flow of reading.

The same with proper quoting:

`---------------------------------------------------

looks pretty fine and is easy to read!

When there are more than two people involved in the discussion (which
is always the case on a mailing list or an usenet newsgroup), it is
also recommended to use a proper attribution line above the quoted
text to see who wrote what, like

There are numerous articles about proper quoting on the web, like the
Wikipedia article mentioned above, http://pub.tsn.dk/how-to-quote.php
and many more.

Sorry if I sound like a smart ass, but taking the little extra time to
properly edit a message before sending it makes the mailing list
significantly easier and more comfortable to read!

Re: RE:K7C - Let's keep this radio oriented

I agaree with all of this, except having the new text below the previous
remarks.  It's much easier, IMHO, to use reverse chronical order.  You
see the most recent and relevant post first, then if you want to see the
background and earlier comments you read backwards through the posts.
With the "post-below" option, one has to scroll all the way through
stuff you may have read before, just to see the new comment.  And, if
you haven't read it before, it's still easier to read the current
message and then decide whether you are interested enough to see what
came before it.  I suppose, to some extent, this is a matter of style,
but I believe what I've said probably is true of a majority of posters.

RE: RE:K7C - Let's keep this radio oriented

Don Wilhelm-3
In reply to this post by Fabian Kurz
Sorry OM,

There are many messages here on the reflector each day, and in total I
likely review over 100 messages a day from various sources.  While I try to
look at each message and prepare an intelligent response, I am unable to
take the time to scroll down, find the proper tic-marks indicating the
previous message, and trying to sort out in-line comments and other such
points of 'proper netiquite' is particularly irritating to me.

If you desire a comment from me, please top post - if you do otherwise, I
will likely miss it because I am unable to spend the excessive time to sort
out just WHERE your responses really are in the mess of words that follow.

I have my flame suit on if anyone cares to differ.

Top Posting OK

Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ
Administrator
I'll add this to the Elecraft list guidelines: Top posting is -OK- on this list.

Like many of you, I also find that reading list postings is -much- faster if the
reply is posted above the copied text.  It is much faster to scan messages this
way, avoiding scrolling down each one for the new text. (Of course if the amount
of copied text is reduced to 1-2 sentences it really doesn't matter where the
reply is, since it will be visible on the first screen :-)

Top posting also makes it much easier to read the list in digest mode, where all
of the daily messages are sent as a single email.

One variance that is also good practice:  When answering a lot of questions in a
prior email, intersperse your replies after each question.

Let's not beat this one to death... I rears it's head at least once yearly with
many, many, opinions on both sides of the issue posted ;-)
