RE:simple iambic paddles

How about paper clips? I made this one a while back and it works great.

Does anyone have a design for a very simple iambic key that can be made
with simple materials and hand tools? The kids are starting to send CW
and I am finding they are having a LOT of trouble with a straight key.
Most immediately gravitate to the bencher so I am trying to find a way
to make a $5 paddle.

Yep, I think Eric wins the 'Simplest Elegant Award' - real neat, never
felt like making home-brew key or paddles before - still working on my
Morse anyway - but I gotta try that!.

Now, I wonder if Eric would like to start a 'Clipper Kits' business :-)

Not sure what you mean by that. These paddles work just like my other dual lever paddles. The term "iambic paddle" is really a misnomer. Iambic refer's to the keyer, not the paddles.

RE: simple iambic paddles

Darwin, Keith
Well, actually, those clever paper clip paddles will only operate iambic
if you use the center post as ground.  That puts the part your fingers
touch at positive potential.  Probably not an issue, but I'd feel a bit
better if the finger pieces were ground.  That would require the center
piece to become 2 pieces.

And, boy is that design ever clever!  Very impressive.

Yes, I wasn't thinking about it, Eric: they are already set up to
operate an Iambic keyer.

Re: simple iambic paddles

Bob Nielsen-2
Probably not a problem in modern solid-state rigs (and an electronic
keyer would be used in any case).  However, that might not be a good
idea for a hand key in some cases :^)

I was thinking the same approach could be used for a single-paddle
design by placing the moving part in the center of the loop.
