Was playing in the 10m contest this weekend and had noise (like a dirty,
hashy carrier, similar to TV-generated noise) every 5-10 kHz as I tuned the band. When I turned my laptop off, it went away. My laptop is about 4 ft from the radio and about 25 ft from my balcony dipole. Any thoughts on how to decrease the noise? Barry -
The interference may be coming from the LCD. Can you reduce the brightness of the display? Also check the power supply - try putting beads on the leads. It could be a noisy switching supply. If, as Jeff suggested, it's Ethernet noise, you could use a USB wireless adapter if the laptop does not already have a wireless network feature. Thanks for comments so far. Running wireless for internet connection (and yes, needs to be connected). Unplugged PS and no change while on battery. Using an external monitor, with laptop monitor off. Turning off external monitor makes no difference.

Barry, what Jeff means is to go to the device manager in your Windows, find the internal Ethernet adaptor, and set it to "disable." In my case it didn't do much, but it's worth a try. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I would try temporarily powering down your router, cable modem, or whatever
equipment is used for the internet connection to be sure it's not actually that equipment causing the problem. Also, even though you powered down the external monitor, I would also try disconnecting that cable from your computer to be sure it's not radiating any rf. Barry;
I have an LCD monitor. Every now and then I get RFI from it. I disconnect it from the power supply for a few seconds, plug it back in and RFI is gone. It may come back in a couple of days or it can be weeks. de <mailto:[hidden email]> K2GN - Larry - <http://k2gn.com/> http://k2gn.com K3 S/N - 3278 P3 S/N - 51 From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Monty Shultes Sent: Sunday, December 12, 2010 10:57 AM To: Barry; [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] RFI from computer Barry - The interference may be coming from the LCD. Any USB/serial dongles connected. There were some postings previously
on these beasties sometimes causing noise. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 12/12/2010 15:38, Barry wrote: > Was playing in the 10m contest this weekend and had noise (like a dirty, > hashy carrier, similar to TV-generated noise) every 5-10 kHz as I tuned > the band.
