I am getting destroyed by RFI on the back panel. I am using a MicroHam
MKII interface. I have ferrites on every cable from the MKII and it is still shutting down the K3. I know the real solution is the RFI mod for the K3. Is there an interim solution? How long would it take if I shipped the K3 back to have all the current mods applied? Guillain-Barre Syndrome pretty much destroyed my sense of touch so intricate mods are beyond my attempt. This RFI is killing my SS attempt tonight. John,
What do you mean by RFI is shutting down your K3 ? Please give some more details. There is a known issue with the MH MKII where it has poor immunity on the USB interface in the presence of a strong RF field. A mod of fitting a single capacitor is available to provide the solution. 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Sat, 7 Nov 2009 20:58:54 -0500, John Gaynard wrote: > I am getting destroyed by RFI on the back panel. Telling that you have no problem is not helping the guy very much :)
I know what you mean, I had a poor power supply that was kicked by RF and completely dropped its output voltage. Thus, also the K3 stopped working after some keyclicks. My suggestion is to check if the power supply is affected by RF Succes! Dick PA3CW

I am noticing keying errors on the k3 ERR PLL and it usually goes away when
I shutdown the MKII interface. I have ferrites on every cable going into the K3 but did not know about the MH MKII USB issue. I am noticing it when I use WinKey from my ACLog logger. I am running a KW into a SteppIR BiggIR vertical with an almost 1:1 SWR. Hi John,
Here is a link to the MKII USB mod. http://www.microham.com/index1.html It is under Support > RFI You then need to look down the page to find it. It is a very easy mod to do, no SMD involved :-) 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Sun, 8 Nov 2009 11:41:19 -0500, John Gaynard wrote: > I am noticing keying errors on the k3 ERR PLL and it usually goes away when > I shutdown the MKII interface. That modification applies only to RF into the audio (MK II preamp) because of the layout in the first production run. It does not impact common mode RF in the shack which is what John's symptoms indicate. 73, ... > I am noticing keying errors on the k3 ERR PLL and it usually > goes away when I shutdown the MKII interface. microKEYER II does not interact with the K3 PLL/Synthesizer in any way. You are seeing "common mode" RF effecting the K3. That common mode RF can be getting there through any device connected to the transceiver. Make sure the feedline to your BigIR has an effective common mode choke so that it does not act like a random radial and put RF on the K3 and/or external interface. An interim solution is to change the feedline length as it will change the RF distribution in the shack! 73, ... I thought my microKEYER was guilty of RFI but it turned out that the audio
patch cables for line in and line out had a less than 10% shield. I temporarily solved the problem with ferrite but a more permenant solution will be RG-58au. Then I lost microphone audio and just got a buzz. I removed the RJ-45 connector from the back of the MK and plugged it back in. Problem gone. Self cleaning contacts are great but you have to activate them. -Robby VY2SS ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

The problem is NOT shielding of the cable, it is either a pin 1 problem in the equipment one end or the other of that cable or RESISTANCE in the cable shield. There are two possible fixes for a pin 1 problem, one of which you found. The other fix is to rewire the defective equipment to eliminate the pin 1 problem. Both pin 1 problems and shield resistance couple shield CURRENT into equipment. A ferrite reduces RF shield current. If it's resistance, RG58 with a robust copper braid shield will help because it has less resistance, not because it's better shielded. If it's a pin 1 problem, it won't help. Another point. That cable is acting as a receive antenna. Changing the length (or orientation) of ANY antenna can change its behavior. For a tutorial on all of this see http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf 73, Jim Brown K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Thanks for the info Jim.
I already have that document on my computer and it is impressive to say the least and I really am going to read it someday however I don't see myself launching into an exhaustive research project when I can make the problem go away easily. I have no idea what a pin 1 problem is but whatever it was, the problem is . . . . . gone. 73, -Robby ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
