RTTY for N00BZ?

Jim AB3CV
I started working my way through trying to figure out RTTY today with the K3
and HRD. Is there a website somewhere that might take me through setting
this up? The RTTY stuff seems scattered throughout the K3 manual.

I was interested in trying to RTTY with T32C.

Never done RTTY before. I was hoping to not to involve the soundcard rather
just use the built in ability of the K3 along with HRD if possible.

I did manage to get the SSB/mic working for the first time similarly
inspired by T32C. Got them on 10 and 15ssb with 5w.

Thanks

Seems like DM780 doesn't support that. So how about a K3/RTTY D-FSK
tutorial?

Don't know about HRD, but my K3 RTTY is minimalist and works great.  For
contests, I use N1MM+MMTTY.  You can use MMTTY alone, it will decode and
print stuff I can't hear, and it's free.

Computer Line Out --> K3 Line In
Computer Line In <-- K3 Line Out

I key the radio down the CAT cable with N1MM but you can just turn VOX
on to do that.  Turn off your MIC [set the mic to line].  You'll need to
fool with the Windoze recording and playback level controls and the K3
line gains, but it's not hard.  Set the K3 to AFSK data, compression
will turn off automatically, you want about 6 bars of ALC.

The PITCH control will become a four position [I think] step switch, I
use 915 Hz [lowest] for the mark frequency, be sure to set that in
MMTTY.  The "standard" >2 KHz frequencies may not work well with
restricted bandwidths and I can't hear them anyway.  915 works great and
is not as tiring as higher pitched RTTY.  DSP bandwidths less than about
300 Hz will degrade copy.

I run my K3 barefoot at 100W no problem.  With the KPA500, I run 500W
[200W on 30m] with no issues at all.  You can monitor both PA temps,
you'll be surprised.

Lots of more complex ways to do it, I haven't found a single issue with
this one.  Be sure to turn off all the Windoze alert sounds, they'll key
the rig.  Oh ... the cables are stereo-stereo from RS.

Is anyone able to run FSK-D (send and receive) from the Elecraft FTDI
USB/Serial converter from something simple like a terminal program? I don't
really want to go through a N1MM plus plugins config. This is for just some
casual contacts rather than contesting. Right now I'd just like to fill in
my RTTY slots with T32C with a simple exchange.

Thanks!

Jim,

Try the terminal tab in K3Utility.  It has worked for me in the past.

Just use the CW paddle with the K3 set for RTTY,  works great for fast
contacts.
Send  IM to stop the RTTY diddle faster at the end of the transmission.

Oh yes and if you are slow on the paddle,  just put your call and report
into a
CW memory on the K3,  and hit the mem button while in data mode and it
will send your info and you dont even have to do fast cw that way.

Re: RTTY for N00BZ?

Dick Dievendorff
I have CW memories set up with my call and 599 TU for RTTY and 5NN TU for CW
and KDVR3 memories set up with my call and "Thanks, you're also 59" for
those late-night DX QSOs when I don't want to wake up the household.
