Radio Shack "Power Up" Device

N2EY
Folks,

There was some discussion about this product recently. Got mine at the RS in
Paoli PA. They had two, but one had been opened/returned, and the salesguy
went out of his way to give me the *unopened* one.

Took it home and charged it up. About 18 hours of charging gave me a the
green LED. I haven't taken voltage readings yet.

I had some doubts that it could jump start a car. Then my brother needed to
jump start his 1976 2002 (it doesn't get driven in bad weather, and his charger
turned out to have gone bad just when he needed it).

The RS device had enough juice to boost the 2002's battery and get the car
started.

Now I'm going to install power poles and see how long it can run a K2....

Him,
Here are some pictures of how I put in PowerPoles.  Take a look at what
I did and you might find a better idea...

I am an avid user and supporter of Anderson PowerPoles.  I buy mine
by the dozens for installation on my gear and that of the three ARES
  fixed installations that I support.

What I do - and it's a lot easier - for such devices as power
supplies or charger/battery combos is to cut the existing external
cable about a foot or so from the end, install a pair of PPs on the
battery part of the cable and another pair on the clamp part of the
cable.  No messing around with the innards of the devices, and if
you need to use the device for its origibal purpose, it's ready to
  go.

The key to the above is the quality of the crimps.  Although the
ratchet tool is relatively expensive ($60 price class), the proper
crimp makes all the difference in ease of installation and current
  capacity of the connector.

Slick!

But a lot of work.

I'll probably just make up a short pigtail with a pair of powerpoles and let them dangle.

In this case, the external battery cables aren't fused, so I would have
had to use the lighter jack anyway, and it's one more dongle to
remember.

Re: [QRP-L] Re: Radio Shack "Power Up" Device

Dave Sublette
I notice that these devices come with various ratings up to 30 amps.
Please be aware that the cigarette lighter socket in your auto is
probabably fused at five amps or so and the design of the cigarette
lighter plug probably will not sustain more than five amps without
melting down.  I know....I have melted one in my car while running a
laptop computer for my Street Atlas Program....K4TO

Hi All,

FWIW, in case some are still wanting the RS Power Up device, but can't find
it--Today I was in Harbor Freight, and they have one that is amazingly
similar--like just about identical in size, shape, appearance, and battery
size--for $24.99.  A bit more than the RS version, but this one does come
with a charging cable to connect to the AC outlet, and also a cigar lighter
plug cable for in-car charging.  I think the sale on this is in effect until
4/24, but if you go there and can't find it you can get a raincheck.

I just put PowerPoles on the end of a cigarette lighter/cable assembly
that I also bought at the Shack.  It has a 10A fuse and even an
LED-illuminated power switch built into it.
Also, so far I have not noticed any RF from the float charger, but I
have not rigorously checked all the ham bands.

Both of these are great ideas.  I have a high-current cigarette lighter plug
with APs on it.  Likewise, I have everything I can get my hands on that is
twelve volts setup with Andersons.

One of my favorites is my light.  At K-Mart, Home Depot and other stores
(not Wallmart) is a lamp called a "closet light".  It is an 8 watt, 12 volt
light that uses 8 AA batteries.  I modified mine to have an AP connector on
it.  The newer ones come with female barrel connectors on them for external
power.  Mine comes in really handy during a brief power outage, or for
lighting the rear of my cargo van.

Dave, that is the pack I use.  The one actually has a tire pump as well.  I
bought it for emergency power and have used it more often than I thought
would be needed.  This past Master's Golf Tournament week I used it to jump
off no less than 6 cars without needing to charge the battery.  There is a
door for the air hose to come out which will be a good place to house an
extension with Andersons on it.  I haven't done it yet, but I might.  Since
I have an abundance of vehicle batteries and a good Deep-cycle battery, I
have been setting up to use them as primary backups.  I am running an IC-706
MK II which isn't the most portable-battery friendly rig.
