Hi Geoff --
We used Heil HC-5 mic elements (the so-called "full range" element, not the "DX operation" element). Mic gain and compression were both set at 15. A few operators were caught fidgeting with the mic/compression settings, but we tried to discourage changes to these settings. 73, -- Eric K3NA VP6DX co-leader on 08 Feb 13 Wed 10:22 Geoffrey Downs said the following: > Re VP6DX - they do sound good. Eric,
I've used the Heil Pro Set with the HC-5 for some years now, and have received many unsolicited raves about my audio. The HC-5 is NOT a "full-range" (flat) element. It is expertly tailored for voice frequencies, but is not as highly constricted as the HC-4. It is very enjoyable to listen to, yet still has plenty of punch when used with an appropriate amount of compression. After listening to a number of HC-4s on the air, I concluded that although they do punch through the QRM very well, they're just too ugly-sounding to put up with. :-) So I'm sticking with the HC-5. Any desired tweaks can be made with the K3 TX equalization, bu for my money, the HC-5 sounds just great the way it is. Eric,
Many thanks for the information. I take it from what you say that you did not have any + or - equalisation settings. The audio sounded good and punchy, backed up by very good signal strength whenever I heard you. I too have had good results with the HC5 but have only had my K3 running for about a month so am still experimenting. Currently I am using the HC4 with settings that I think Bill W5WVO might find a bit "ugly" but my main amateur radio activity is chasing ssb dx on 80m so for me maybe a bit of ugly is no bad thing! ;-) Anyway experiments continue. Many congratulations on a very successful expedition at Ducie, Eric. It came over as a smooth and professional operation that has set a high standard for others to follow. And I do not underestimate the tremendous amount of hard work and planning put in by you and the team to achieve those results. Perhaps I can add my thanks to the many others you have no doubt received, especially in my case for the new country on 80m. 73 to all Geoff G3UCK ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eric Scace K3NA" <[hidden email]> To: "Geoffrey Downs" <[hidden email]>; <[hidden email]> Sent: Friday, March 07, 2008 4:52 AM Subject: Mic for K3 > Hi Geoff -- > > We used Heil HC-5 mic elements (the so-called "full range" element, not > the "DX operation" element).
