Wife got me the kpa100 for my k2 this Christmas. Started to put it together and found the rfc 6,7,and 8 seem to be the small size rather than the miniature the holes are spaced for. Will it hurt to install them in a slightly vertical orientation or did I get the wrong ones in the kit? I am positive I have correctly identified the chokes and all the others fit like they are supposed to. Kevin

I just got the KX1 for Christmas from my XYL and found that L9 was supposed to be a micro sized 100 uH device. The one I have is a mini size, not micro. The board layout was for the micro as well. I contacted Elecraft and they told me that the micro size is no longer available so that is the part to use. They also forwarded a link for how to install the inductor:
http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/Builder_Alert_Installing_Small_Chokes.htm I'm not sure if this applies to your KPA100, though, but thought I would share some possibility of the same issue. There are instructions for handling those chokes on the Elecaft web site at:

EVERYONE WHO BUILDS A NEW ELECRAFT KIT SHOULD READ THIS APPLICATION NOTE!!!
It deals with the fact that Elecraft appears to have bitten the bullet and substituted heavier-duty (and slightly larger) RFCs for many of the sub-mini RFCs used in their kits. The end product will be fewer damaged RFCs and happier builders. BUT you do NEED to know how to handle/install the newer RFCs since they might not fit directly into the available holes... here's how. >http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/Builder_Alert_Installing_Small_Chokes.htm Thanks to Elecraft for this app note! 73, Tom N0SS _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Kevin,
Look at the Builder's resource page and Application Notes section on the Elecraft website www.elecraft.com for a diagram of how to handle parts that are larger than the holes as well as a lot of good information about soldering and other subjects. The leads should be formed under the part a bit and then run downward if the part is to fit parallel with the board, but other than 'neatness' there is no problem if the chokes are tilted a bit either (at least no problem at the HF frequencies, VHF/UHF may have other considerations). 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > > Wife got me the kpa100 for my k2 this Christmas. Tom,
Can you elaborate on the reason for the change? Is it a construction thing or an operational improvement. In other words, if my K2 is happy should I be concerned about replacing the RFC's already installed? thanks Tom WB2QDG k2 1103 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Hammond" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Tuesday, January 09, 2007 1:11 PM Subject: [Elecraft] NEED TO VISIT THIS LINK (was: Rf chokes too large?) > EVERYONE WHO BUILDS A NEW ELECRAFT KIT SHOULD READ THIS APPLICATION > NOTE!!! > > It deals with the fact that Elecraft appears to have bitten the bullet and > substituted heavier-duty (and slightly larger) RFCs for many of the > sub-mini RFCs used in their kits. The reason given to me a couple of days ago by Elecraft (for L9 in my
KX1, I assume similar applies) was because the "micro" part is no longer available so the "mini" part has been substituted. No. Do not change any installed RFC's.
As the note explains, it's quite possible to break the connections inside the inductor by bending the leads too tightly at right angles to the main body, especially on the smaller sub-miniature units. One wants to be careful about bending the leads on the inductors as the alert explains. But, if you have a broken inductor, you unit will not pass the performance tests (as several builders discovered). Also, as Elecraft changes to lead-free RoHS-compliant parts they are finding that some of the sub-miniature inductors do not have RoHS equivalents and a slightly larger unit must be used. These parts can be used quite easily, but they require the leads be reformed in a slightly different manner. The alert explains how to do that.
