S-Meter nd RF Gain Control.

Chris W7CTH
I have my K3 completed for all but this part. I ran the K3 utility. At this
point I don't have a signal generator to run this test.
How important is this?
Thanks

It's recommended but not absolutely necessary since it will use defaults if you skip it.  You can always do it later when you get a 50 uV generator.

Hi Chris...

I recently built my first K3 and I borrowed a signal source (XG1) from a
friend and made this test/adjustment.  But, honestly, I don't remember any
significant change in settings from factory default.  I'd suggest just use
the radio.  It would be nice to acquire an XG1 or 2 so you can make this
test at a later time.  You might find the build fun, or may locate one at a
ham fest or SK sale.

If you lack a signal source, you can attach a length of hookup wire to
the antenna jack, tune to 49.380 MHz and tune in the ref osc signal.
Adjust the coupling of the wire to the signal source (OK, just move the
wire around) until you have an S9 signal using factory settings and with
PRE ON and RF Gain max.

Don't move the wire!

Run RF Gain Cal as if you had a 50 uV source.

The advantage of this, even though it is not as precise as using a sig
gen, is that the radio-to-radio variations in the IF amplifier
gain-versus-voltage are mapped out and you'll often find you get
smoother RF gain control operation after having run the cal.

If you mess up, K3 Utility can always reset you to factory defaults.
