Safari Problem

Richard Thorpe-2
Since I upgraded to "Lion" on my iMac I cannot download manuals etc. from the Elecraft website.  When I try to download a PDF doc. it says I need a plugin.  I follow the links and download the latest Adobe product but still no joy.  I cannot find the "plugin" it asks for.  Is it me or are others having this issue?  Thank you.

Re: Safari Problem

It seems to work here like it always has. Safari downloads the file and it opens in Preview. There is no plugin required to open a PDF.  And you don't need Acrobat.

What's you default application for .PDF files?

Perhaps you have a problem with your installation of Lion.   I have Lion installed on my MBP, and Preview opens the Elecraft pdf stuff just fine when I use Firefox.  However, Safari seems to work OK, too — I just opened some of the pdfs from the Elecraft Manuals & Downloads page with no trouble — they come up right inside Safari.

Re: Safari Problem

David Fleming-2
Apparently there is a problem with Adobe Reader and Lion. I use Chrome as my main browser, but I've been using the SchubertIt PDF plug-in with Safari. It works great! Much better than Adobe. It should solve your problem.

http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/

You could also remove the Adobe plug-in so that the PDF's will open in Safari's embedded PDF viewer. Navigate to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins. You should see the AdobePDFViewerPlugin there. If you don't have one already, create a directory called Disabled Plugins. Move the AdobePDFViewPlugin there and restart Safari. Safari should then use its embedded PDF viewer instead of Adobe. You can check Safari's Help->Installed Plug-ins menu to see that Adobe is no longer included in the list of loaded plugins..

But I would opt for the SchubertIt plugin.

Re: Safari Problem

Rick Prather-2

Speaking of PDF viewers in OSX I think I can bring this thread back to Elecraft!  :-)

Since I bought Fred Cady's K3 manual I have not been able to search it like I can with any other PDF including the Elecraft manual.  I have tried it with Preview and even reinstalled Adobe Acrobat and neither will give me search results.

Does it have to do with how the book was converted to PDF?

Rick,

I don't think so.  I can certainly search within it on my iPad and on my Mac
Mini running Snow Leopard.

Thank you all for your  responses, I have the problem on two machines running 10.7.2 and so does a local friend.  Its a little off topic for this net so I will go elsewhere to find the problem.  Thanks to all.

Stephen, you gave me the idea to check it on my iPad and I find it doesn't search within the book on there either even though other PDF's search fine.

Also, as I was looking at Fred's web site I saw he had a bunch of updated pages listed.  So, I downloaded them and then using Preview I inserted them in the proper place in the manual.  (Preview is slick for this).

Now, when I search for something it finds any occurrences on the new pages but still not in the original.

Strange indeed!

Re: Safari Problem

Strange indeed.  OSX 10.6.8 Preview Version 5.0.3 (504.1)  searches
Elecraft_k3_ver2o.pdf  just fine.

But yes, there are ways to restrict various functions when you create a pdf.

Later versions of the book might have been created differently than
the one I have.
