It's a good idea ...

Makes more aware of the sale ...

I've lready looked at it, even though I'm not an E-Bay "regular"
and wouldn't have known about it except for the posting.

Re: Selling my K2.

I make it a point of never buying any radios on eBay usually there is a
problem with them or they wouldn't be there. If the items are listed on the
ham related forums you can most of the time (or I do anyway) feel more
confident that they are in the condition listed. In no way have I ever felt
that way about used items bought off of eBay it is like hamfest gear you
can't test be ready to do work on it.

So far I have only been burnt one time on a item I bought on QRZ am Yaesu
VL-1000 amp. It was bought from a ham in AZ. who said he had just had it
into Yaesu to be checked out ( that turned out to be a lie) bought the amp.
He insisted on Money Orders I wanted to use Pay Pal and I pay the fee he
wouldn't first mistake.

I paid him for the amp and shipping received it 10 days later opened it and
it was DOA. Called him and he wasn't very happy to hear about, I asked him
if he checked it out after Yaesu sent it to him he didn't he said. Finally
told me to ship the amp back to him I did so. In the mean time I called
Yaesu about the repairs that were done to the amp they checked and all that
was done was replace the display and both covers top/sides and bottom
nothing else checked.

2 weeks later he called me mad because a very small piece of scotch tape
where it overlapped the clear plastic on the amp had gotten on the top of
the amp. I told him I was sorry but not a problem for sure nothing was
harmed for sure. He sent a photo of the tape where he had left it on the amp
when he removed the plastic, the tape had been cut on both sides to leave
about 1/2" on it.

He kept $250 of my money because he said that the cover would have to be
replaced and gave me no options the shipping/insurance for the 2 box's 2
ways was just over $400 so that lesion cost me $650. Moral of the story
NEVER, NEVER use a Money Order/Cash same in the mail always use Pay Pal tied
to a Credit Card only not your checking account then you have recourse.

Or the best way buy from someone you know or someone on this reflector I
have bought numerous items here and all great people.

73,
Fred/N0AZZ

Re: Selling my K2.

JP O'Connor
Hi Fred,

Sorry to hear about the bad experience on that transaction. I have had one
like that as well. Same kind of deal as yours.

Not all items on ebay are bad - the majority are legitimate and as
described. It has not at all been my experience that "...usually there
is a problem
with them or they wouldn't be there." Yes, sometimes that is the case, of
course.

I have purchased numerous radios on ebay and all were exactly as described.
Like you said, don't do the money order thing. Credit card via PayPal.
Great advice! I use that same method and steer clear of items where they
want a money order or there are other "fishy" signs. Regardless, one must
carefully read the description, study the pictures, look at the feedback,
and then not let desire for an item cloud judgement. Of course, buying from
a seller that is well known, or known to you, or frequents reflectors of
the character of this one, is certainly the best way, when it is an option.

I'm glad that Gil notified us of his ebay listing. Like Ken, I might have
missed it otherwise.

I never had a problem with Ebay, but I am very careful. I only accept
Paypal and check the seller's rating. If he doesn't have something like
99% and at least a couple dozen ratings, I don't deal. No legitimate
Ebay seller wants his rating bashed.. I think problem radios often come
from estate sales, and the seller doesn't check them out. There is
always the crook out there, but their rating quickly suffers.

I am selling the K2 to get a KX3. It is hard for me to sell something I
built and that works so well. I love the K2, but the KX3 is more
portable, which is the kind of operation I like. I take my K1 to the
local coffee shop on a regular basis and clamp my Buddistick to my table
outside. Great fun! The K2 doesn't fit in my backpack with my laptop in
it. One guy asked me what I was doing, I said "I'm calling the
mothership," and he looked up to the sky! LOL.

With the K1, I carry three items, a battery, the K1, and my paddles.
With the KX3, I'll have only one, using the attached paddles. That also
means a Pelican 1200 case Instead of the 1400 I use for my K1... I can
also use the KX3 at home like I do my K2. It's quite a bit more money
for me, but if I also sell my Icom IC-271A, I'll be getting close ;-)

Fred and All,

I think Fred's comment is a bit excessive.  It's a shame he had a bad
experience, but the same thing could have happened if he had used almost any
other "venue" for selling gear, like Eham, or QTH, or whatever.  You can't
just blame Ebay for your own mistakes.  His comments about being more
careful about just how you effect the transaction are more appropriate.
Truth is, you can make a bad deal anywhere!

I don't use Ebay a lot, but I have made a few acquisitions through it.
Fortunately, they all turned out O.K.  I guess I was just lucky.  Like Fred,
I'm somewhat cautious about some things I see there, but that's mainly
because it is so wide open.  Half the time you really don't know who you are
really dealing with.  Usually, though, you do have the option to contact the
seller first, so it doesn't have to be totally blind faith.

In any event, if you have any significant concerns, you should probably
follow Fred's suggestion and get some sort of assurance that you have
recourse.  You should probably do that with any 2nd hand acquisition,
regardless of where you get it.  I think Ebay has some sort of "problem
resolution" process, but I don't know how effective it is since I've never
had to use it.  If it has any value at all, it may be better to buy there
than on some other venues.  However, I think the first rule of any such
transaction should be to have at least some idea as to who you are dealing
with.  If it's some "phantom", hiding behind some obtuse ID, you don't have
much upon which to place your faith.  I also have another rule--"When in
doubt, pass!"  If you can't get the assurances that make you reasonably
comfortable, I'd let the deal go.  Except in rare instances, there is almost
surely going to be another equally reasonable deal, if not better, coming
down the pike.  Personally, I have to keep reminding myself of this last
rule.  It's hard not to get somewhat excited (and possibly foolish) when you
see a good deal come along.

I have had bad experiences buying ham equipment on eBay and like Fred focus on QTH.com or qrz.com for used equipment. Burned by radiomart 2x, and a bad old skool Yaesu tube amp. These three experiences has made me move to those websites that are actually run and managed by ham operators.

I do use ebay and have had excellent experience buying discontinued Geoffrey Rowley Vans circa 1999/2000 on eBay and a certain pair of Perry Ellis pants that I like wearing.
