Serial # 690 lives

srife
K3/100 kit arrived yesterday afternoon (04/17/08) and I started
construction around 2330Z. By 0700Z I was playing around with the 10W
version and trying to figure out all of the calibrations. I had not done
much reading in the manual to prepare for first use, but I am stumbling
through it.

I have one question right away. I went through and enabled all of the
options that I have installed. When I try to use the auto tuner it tells me
it is not installed. Can someone tell me what I am missing here?

K3 Power Supply

Lennart Michaëlsson
Any good ideas?
Presently using an old  (and heavy) Yeasy power supply, working very well
but - like many others I plan to bring my K3 on trips as well.
Anyone tested the MFJ-4125? In that case: How about the noise level?
Any other/better low weight switching power supplies?
Must say the K3 performs very well and has exceeded my expectations.

Re: K3 Power Supply

Don Brown-4
Hi

Yes I have used a MFJ-4125 and it is very quiet both RF and fan noise. I
also have a 4225-MV and A 4245-MV . The 4225-MV is the same as the 4125
except it has lighted volt and amp meters and a pot on the front panel to
adjust the voltage. I use the 4225-MV for a bench supply when I work on
radio equipment and The 4245-MV runs my shack, a K3 and a Kenwood TMD-700 2
meter/440 radio.  I use Rigrunners and Anderson PowerPoles on everything

Thanks

Lennart,

This is pretty simple issue.  I use a variety of power supplies with the K2 and the K3.  I like the Astron SS-20 and SS-25.  Why?  Because I got them for a good price at a hamfest.  Nothing special, they just work.  I have run Field Day with those on generator power and have had no issues at all.  They are light weight and very small.  I think any switching power supply that is on the market today would work fine.

In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply.  If you don't have any Common Sense - get some Common Sense and use it.  If you can't find any Common Sense, ask for help from somebody who has some Common Sense.  Is Common Sense divine?

K3 Power Supply

Phil Salas
In reply to this post by srife
I use an MFJ-4125 for portable operation because it is so small and light.
It is also very RF quiet.  For base station use, I use a Samlex SEC-1235M
which is also very RF quiet (I have a review of the Samlex power supply on
my website at www.ad5x.com).  Finally, I also have a Gamma HPS-1a (also
reviewed on my website) but it is a little marginal with my IC-706MKIIG.  It
would probably be fine with the K3, since the K3 uses less current on
receive than the IC-706MKIIG - and you can easily operate QSK with the K3.
