Slightly OT: Physical tuning knob for K3 through HRD?

K5WA
This might be a question for an HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe software) group, but
since I'm only interested in connecting my K3s, I thought I'd see if anyone
was on top of this.  Does HRD allow some type of encoder input whereby I
could have a "real" VFO knob adjusting frequency rather than using a mouse?
If so, has anyone set it up over a remote link such as an internet
connection?

I would love to see Elecraft make a product that matches the K3's style of
VFO knob for such a purpose.

Bob, what's the advantage of that over the knob ON the rig?

A Griffin PowerMate (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/powermate) allows you to do this with some s/w - not sure about HRD, as Simon.

I use this with MacLoggerDx (and have been for about 10 years) - works a treat :-)

You can sit with the k/b under your fingertips and tune with your arm resting on the desk, so if your s&p or looking for that rare DX, its less tiring.

There is a program on my website called KTune that allows you to use a Griffin PowerMate for this. However, you have to use some serial port sharing software because it needs to talk directly to the K3. I used VSPE, but I don't know if that works with HRD. LP-Bridge might work - haven't tried it.

If HRD supports keystrokes for tuning up and down then you could configure the PowerMate software to send those keystrokes straight to HRD, in nwhich case you wouldn't need KTune.

The knob ON the rig is 60 miles away from my home so I'm looking for
something other than HRD's mouse control to augment the feel of a remote
station control system.

David,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I was hoping someone in the K3 community had
already done this successfully but I guess an email to Simon is what I
should do next.

There's a probram out there called KTune that allows a Griffin Powermate
to stay connected to the K3 regardless of what window has focus on your
computer.  It works nicely.  Also...for an added touch, order a spare
rubber ring that goes on the K3 VFO-A knob and a finger dimple.  The
ring fits perfectly over the powermate.

Re: Slightly OT: Physical tuning knob for K3 through HRD?

Don Wilhelm-4
Greg,

Thanks for that information.  I have not tried it yet, but if KTune
works no matter what window has focus, then that is a big "selling point".
I plan to try it through LP-Bridge.

I am not certain this addresses the original question about use of a
Griffen PowerMate at a remote location, but it certainly does help those
who have a local K3.  I would imagine that for use in a remote K3
situation, the PowerMate would have to emulate tuning to the application
being used for remote operation rather than directly to the K3. (Julian,
correct me if I am wrong on that assumption.)

Re: Slightly OT: Physical tuning knob for K3 through HRD?

Julian, G4ILO
You are correct, Don. I too missed that the K3 was being operated remotely.

As I said earlier, if it is possible to change frequency using the keyboard with HRD then it should be possible to program the PowerMate driver to send the same keystrokes to HRD, so KTune would not be necessary. The only difference is that HRD would have to be in the foreground, whereas KTune captures global hotkeys so it continues to work whatever application you are currently using.
