Soldering stations

Wingkeel
Hi Paul,

I haven't done any soldering in about 20-years!  When I bought my K2 kit
a month ago, I went out and researched irons.  I settled on a Weller WESD51
after talking to a technician at the National Renewable Energy Labs.  He stated
that he uses that one because of its superior static eliminating and heating
controlled tip.

I don;t know about the other stuff but I have immensely enjoyed my WESD51
while building my K2 and a couple other smaller projects.  Even when solding
fairly large projects like PL259's, the tip temperature doesn't waiver.  The
normal stuff takes about 1.5 seconds per solder joint.  Less than a second for
smaller pads.

I'm no expert but I sure like this iron...

A Weller WESD51 with an ETR tip works very well for PC boards.

My suggestion (thought not cheap):

936-12 Solder Station (ESD Safe - Black)

get the tip cleaner too (you can refill it with Chore Boy pads)

599B Tip Cleaner

I bought one for my KX1 build and it is a joy,

I would also like to take the time to mention to everyone about the importance
of a fume fan just to get the solder fumes sucked away from your breathing
space as you solder.  I made mine from old computer fans.  If it was higher
speed and volume this might cause a static buildup issue, but the iron I
mentioned is ESD safe and I always keep a static strap on my wrist (another
important thing to remember).

Hope this helps.
