I have the full Kline and I've always thought something was not quite right with my KAT500, but i had an antenna that was below 2:1 in swr and it didn't run.
However today I connected my new beam and it is below 2:1 from 14.2 to 14.3 so it was time for the tuner. I put the kpa in standby, set the power on the k3 to 40 watts (tried 30 and 60 no difference) and hit the tune button starting at 14.0 and went up by 20 kHz over the whole range. Everything seemed fine if I transmitted with the kpa at the last tune. However if I then changed the frequency going from let's say 14.2 to 14.070, when I went to transmit at 14.070 all the swr lights went on and I got a fault in the kpa, fault 9 I.e. high reflected power. If I then initiated a tune, there was no tuning occurring and the k3 would give 5.7 to 1 and just sit there. The kat would not tune at all. If I did it again, all of a sudden it would show 1.2 to one and transmit would then be okay. If I then went back to 14.2 again and try to transmit again I would get the high reflected power and if I tuned it would say something like 4.1:1 but then be normalthe second time I hit the tune. So I just went up and down retuning and just in tune mode I would see the same thing if I changed the frequencies by a large amount. So what gives? What am I doing wrong? Yes the kat3 is in bypass. Also tried this with two different antennas with the same result

Hi
I tried everything suggested and there is no difference, I guess a call to support is needed. Thanks for all the suggestions Tom Envoyé depuis le Samsung GALAXY S4 via le réseau SFR -------- Original message -------- From: Dick Dievendorff <[hidden email]> Date: 30/09/2013 07:40 (GMT-05:00) To: Tom <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Something's not right with my KAT and KPA I'm sitting in an airport and recalling from memory. Do you have the amplifier key line connected thru the KAT500? This requires a couple of 15 pin cables, there are pictures in the KAT500 owners manual. Have you selected the optimize for KPA500 button in the KAT500 Utility, Configuration, edit configuration, amplifier key interrupt power? These are necessary for smooth K line operation.
