Source of mating ACC cconnector (K3)

Jack Colson
The subject line says it all!  I don't see a mention of the connector
type in the manual.  Is it identical to a monitor connector ?  All I
need it one!
Thank you,

Yes, it's the same connector as a 15-pin VGA monitor connector.

However some VGA monitor cables do not have all the necessary pins
connected, so be careful...

Not only that, but often the pins that are not connected through are
shorted to the shield (i.e. grounded)!

Be nice if we could order from Elecraft, especially from outside US, along

Can't you get it from Maplin? I used one of these: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1113 .

Re: Source of mating ACC cconnector (K3)

There are various sources in the UK and Eu, but I was thinking about folks
around the world not as fortunate as us with in-country suppliers.  In my
view it should be possible to buy all connectors and cables from the main
equipment supplier who will then have no problem guaranteeing their own
product with quality parts.  A one-stop shop if you like.

David,

These are standard High Density DB-15 connectors that are available all over
the world.

Cut one off of an old VGA CRT in the recycle bin if you can't find one in a
store.

Re: Source of mating ACC cconnector (K3)

Don Wilhelm-4
A caution for anyone planning to use a recycled VGA cable.  Several pins
are connected together, often right at the connector.
So plan on completely extracting the DB15 connector from the end of the
VGA cable - that means cutting off the molded cover and de-solder any
connections between the pins.  Your K3 will not work correctly if you
plug a VGA cable into the ACC socket.

Re: Source of mating ACC connector (K3)

Bob Naumann W5OV
Don,

I believe that this point has been made in this discussion already. Your
warning also applies to new VGA extension cables or any other pre-made cable
- of any type - with any connector. You cannot ever trust what it says on
the package.

That said, some VGA cables are fine, and connect all 15 pins straight
through. Check them first though.

If anyone were to presume that the connections would be correct in an
unknown cable without verifying it, shame on them.

The real point is that the DB15HD connector is a very common standard part
and not some special thing that should cause anyone, anywhere in the world,
any difficulty or hardship to locate.

73,

Bob W5OV

Re: Source of mating ACC cconnector (K3)

Ted Roycraft
In reply to this post by Jack Colson
Jack,

It is not identical to most monitor connectors.  I have a half dozen
monitor cables and all of them are missing a pin 9 connection (I think
it's pin 9 - it's one of the BAND pins in any case).  If you don't plan
to use the BAND signals, then you might be able to get by with a
computer VGA cable.  I could not find a cable with all 15 pins connected
through from any of the usual vendors including Mouser, RadioShack, and
any of the computer parts suppliers that I looked at.  Someone on this
group pointed me to
http://www.cablewholesale.com/specs/svga-cable/10h1-20203.htm.  I bought
this cable and verified that it does have all 15 pins connected through
and no pins shorted together and it is working well for me.

I'm sure it was Cable wholesale that also has a  nice DB15 "Y" to allow to
devices to be connected.
In my case, one is my Quadra AMP and the other is from the MK II for RTTY.
Works great.

I get them from Mouser.  The male connector is 156-1815-E ($1.80 ea).  For
the hood, I use the 156-2009-ex ($0.65).
