Spectrogram download site

Chris Ishmael
Does anyone know specifically where I can download Spectrogram? All the downloads I find just lead to pop-ups to third party download sites with unrelated garbage software. I can't even find Spectrogram's website, is it even a current supported program?

Re: Spectrogram download site

Chris,

Spectrogram is no longer a supported program - the author is no longer
'in business'.
However, before stopping support, the author announced that version 16
would be freeware.  Version 5.17 had already been made freeware before
that time.
If you look on my website www.w3fpr.com, near the bottom of the
homepage, you will find links to both these freeware programs that I
have on my site.
These should be clean of any viruses and Trojans.  I scanned them with
several scanners before putting them in the download files area of my
website.  If you find otherwise, please let me know.

With permission of the author, the last public version is on my
website.  Scroll down to find it.  http://k9yc.com/publish.htm You're on
your own -- although I used it ten years ago to tweak my K2s, I know
nothing about it. :)

Hi Don,

My Norton AntiVirus program won't let me run the last version of Spectrogram from
your website (the one with the exe file) ; it says it was infected with
"WS.Reputation.1", and deletes the file automatically.  The 5.17 version installs
fine on my Windows 7 64 bit computer.

However, I have always used Spectran as a simple waterfall program and also as a very
narrow DSP filter to copy weak CW signals.   I think Spectran is pretty easy to set
up and use and I have found it more useful for my applications:

Re: Spectrogram download site

Norton labels almost all new programs as infected with the WS.Reputation
virus, see here:
http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/WS-Reputation-1-is-this-the-best-they-can-come-with/td-p/616601

There is a way around the auto-delete, but I can't remember how to do it
at this point. Hopefully someone will chime in on how to do that.

Lance,

I just downloaded it and scanned with both Malwarebytes and MS Security
Essentials.  No problems detected with either.  I have heard of Norton
giving false positives in the past, and have long since stopped using it.

Get rid of the virus called Norton Anti-Virus. Install the free version
of Avast or AVG. That'll do it, and protect you as well. Also use
Malawarebytes.

PS: No pecuniary interest in Avast, AVG, or Norton. Norton is a problem
for many, not a cure.

Re: Spectrogram download site

EricJ-2
+1 for AVG and Malwarebytes together. I run both. That virus that
kidnaps your computer until you pay $300 ransom got mine before I had
Malwarebytes. It was the only anti-virus software that could detect it
and fix it in Safe Mode.

I pay for both on my primary computer mostly to ensure support, but the
freeware versions of both have been fine on my ham-radio-only Win7 computer.

I had the same problem.  It insisted that 7zip be installed.  I had used
it long ago, so trusted it.  WRONG.  It took awhile to remove all of the
crap it put on the computer.  I think I counted 5 programs that were
installed, all of which run and make changes to your system.

By the way, Norton had no issues with it.  See other comments about
them.

Not bad advice.  Norton is extremely hard to remove by yourself.
Add/remove does not do it.  You need to go to Norton's site and pull a
program that removes it (at least it says it does) from all of the
registry entries and cleans things up.  I still have it on one of my
computers, because it is needed for some other things.  But, I've gone
with AVG on everything else.  Norton has WAY too much overhead and slows
the computer down considerably.

And if it is really a performance issue (isn't for me) you can dial some of
the timers, tasks and features down to be somewhat less aggressive.  I run
Photoshop (in 64 bit, probably the largest most intensive software I own)
and don't notice any performance hit.

But whatever makes one feel safe and happy.  I have no pecuniary interest in
anything other than my retirement fund.  ;o)

In many software circles Norton Anti-Virus is considered a virus itself
because of all the unnecessary grief it causes users.

The main reason I dumped Norton a long time ago was because it slowed down
the computer so bad, like real bad. Went to AVG and never looked back plus
saved a lot of money even with the full purchased version of AVG on my shack
computers (3). On the other 4 the free version's never have failed in 8
years. As always YMMV 8>)

That's an expensive product, just to setup a radio.....

> +1 for AVG and Malwarebytes together. I run both. That virus that
> kidnaps your computer until you pay $300 ransom got mine before I had
> Malwarebytes. It was the only anti-virus software that could detect it

Malwarebytes is good, remember to keep it up-to-date.   AVG(free) is a bit
behind the pack in the AV stakes however.

About the best AV (not free) is Eset's Nod32 for Windows users.  I think they
even still support Win2k, if you need to keep some instrumentation running
that uses that as an embedded OS for example, and it also gives you a realy
flexible and powerful firewall for those older OS's.

(No affiliation, just a satisfied happy user.)

But...

The smart money, is to NOT open ANY attachments, or click on links in emails
received unexpectedly, from anyone, especially those you don't know.  And in
this context, that includes email lists, such as this!

Even if someone you know sends you something unexpectedly, DO NOT open it,
untill you've contacted them and made sure they know it, and intended to send
it to you.

In the case of CryptoLocker, the only real defence, is to have daily (or more
frequent) viable backups of your personal and other important data, or feel
realy smug, and don't use Windows as your OS!

(Note for MS Office users.  There is also a recently discovered problem with
some versions of that, that can be compromised and your PC taken over as a
result of opening some malicious .TIF files!)

It is possible to run your mail client (or browser, or anything else for that
matter) under "Sandboxie" (google it.)  That wont prevent infection or bad
things happening, or protect your privacy, but it will contain any malicuous
writes to your system, such as the encrypted files, and also preventing it from
removing/deleting your original files, even preventing it from messing with the
live copy of the registry.

Just deleting the contents of the sandbox will then remove all trace of it.   Very
useful for people who for whatever reason like to visit the "darker corners" of
the web.

Anyone who does get hit by CryptoLocker, if they realy need to (like, they don't
have viable backups) get their data back.  DO NOT remove the infection until
after paying up and decrypting the files.  It can be done after disinfection, but
it's a whole lot more painful to do.  As the disinfection process removes all the
tools it provides to decrypt your data once payment has been processed.

The other thing to note, is that this will just be the first of this sort of
ransomware to appear.  It's just too successful for the bad guys.

Take great care people.  Trust no one, not even me.

73.

Dave G0WBX.

Ayup. I used Norton briefly back in DOS days. It was a resource hogging
computer crasher even then. Since, my experience is the vicarious
variety, fixing other folks' PCs after Norton has (pick a number):
1. Trashed it
2. Slowed it to a crawl
3. Crashed it
4. Prevented longstanding software from running til the patch, if ever
5. Prevented new software from running til the patch, if ever
......etc.
Sadly these days its installed as bloatware on new PC's.

Some lucky folk profess not to have any issues with it. More power to em.

Never installed 7zip because my anti-malware program (VIPRE

I ran Norton Antivirus several years ago on win2000pro but switched
to AVG on all but two of my computers.  I have an old win95 laptop
that never goes on-line and another backup computer which I run ESET antivirus.

MalewareBytes is the only software that catches all the bad stuff.  I
run a scan once a week and it always has quarantined up to 80
hits.  AVG2013 does pretty good with catching some of the bad stuff.

Then I run SpeedyPCTools to keep the computer from constipation with
unnecessary files.

The newest of my laptops has win8pro and I was told by a MS sw
engineer that it required no antivirus sw.  I have AVG2013 running,
just in case.  I have some opinions on win8, but will spare all of
you hearing about it.

This household has three desktops, three laptops, and couple kindles
plus ipad-3  (enough for two people?)
