Spot button QSYs K3

Robby.VY2SS
Using F/W upgrade 4.39.

I just noticed that when I push the spot button the K3 will QSY down a little over 2 khz. It is never the exact same amount. It does not necessarily stop on a signal. This happens when I have a CW signal in the passband or not. The last three times I did the calculation it went -2.176 khz, -2.146 khz and -2.189 khz. Is this a result of my recent upgrade or finger trouble. (again)

It sounds to me like you have autospot enabled. I'm not sitting in front of
the K3 at the moment to check. That will go qsying away in search of a tone
when there isn't one, so that would make some sort of sense.  Can't remember
how to turn it off though!

Re: Spot button QSYs K3

Hi Stephen & Robby,

Autospot is turned on when the CWT is activated. You can see this on the S meter display. With CWT activated, the right half of the S meter display shows the CWT tuning bar. Press the CWT button to toggle it on and off. As Stephen indicated, with CWT active the SPOT button becomes an automatic spotting tool. You won't hear the spot tone but you will see the word AUTO on the bottom display and you will see VFO A change frequency to match the tone of an incoming CW signal. It will do it even if the LOCK button is activated. I haven't seen it move several KHz but maybe if the filter width is wide and there is a strong CW signal a few KHz away it might migrate that far.

I use autospot extensively and even have a keyboard shortcut for it when using WriteLog contest software. Operating search and pounce, I will use autospot several thousand times in a big two day contest. If you remember when personal computers were in their infancy there would be certain programs that were called Killer Apps because people actually ran out to buy PCs just to run those programs. For me, autospot, is a K3 Killer App.

Others have mentioned the Autospot feature, and here's an observation on
that as it relates to your issue of a large freq change.

If my freq resolution is at 10Hz or 100Hz and I try to Autospot, I will
get a 2kHz shift as you described. If, however, I am set to 1Hz
resolution, the Autospot feature brings the frequency right where it is
supposed to be.

What firmware version is being used?  When using the auto tune function the
radio should go into fine tune mode and then turn it off after the tuning is
done.

Re: Spot button QSYs K3

Dennis Moore
I'm using 4.39. I just tested it to double check my previous statement.
In 10Hz tuning mode it IS changing to 1Hz mode and tuning properly. In
coarse tune mode (100 Hz), it is not changing tuning rate. I withdraw my
statement about the 10Hz but stand by the 100Hz.

Thanks for making me check!

Note that the CWT indicator range, upon which the autospot function is
based, is only about 200 Hz wide.  In 100 Hz step mode, you'd have to be
less than 1 step away from zero beat for the function to work.

I spent some more time with this and find that if I tune to the low side (tone lower than my pitch setting) and push spot it tunes the way it should but if I turn the dial to hear a higher note than my 680 hz pitch setting the VFO takes off down the band. It will sail right past S9 signals without stopping.

I have 250 and 500 hz filters installed (both 8 pole) and my DSP width set at 350 where I normally have it.
I am using version 4.39 as previously mentioned.
My sub RX is off.
I don't like turning the P3 off because it's like going blind but doing so has no effect on the problem.
Pressing TEXT DEC I have AUTO OFF and Threshold set to 1. Setting it to a higher value does not give me a relialbe tuning bar.
VFO CRS is set to 0.1
VFO CTS is set to 400
VFO FST is set to 50
VFO IND is set to NO
VFO OFS is set to ON
Pitch is set to 680 but other settings have produced similar results.
I don't always use SPOT as the P3 allows me to tune just as accurately and I am usually already looking at it.
I did not notice this SPOT problem before my last F/W upgrade although it could be a coinsidence.
