I am considering changing my station computer's operating system from Windows to Linux. Currently I use Ham Radio Deluxe for station control and would like to know what Linux alternatives are available
The features that I find most useful are: 1) The ability to save and recall stations. I.e., I have icons that represent various ARRL code practice frequencies, the PSK 31 bands, and other settings. 2) Setting band limits. Using Ham radio Deluxe, I am vary unlikely to set the transmitter out of band. 3) Integration with other programs, i.e. logging programs, PSK31 and Satellite tracking. I'm interested in what people are using for Linux, how robust the packages are, and what features they like most about a particular package. Thanks ! Hello Douglas. Take a look at page 89 of the April 2007 issue of QST. You
can boot your computer into Linux using a 2 GB USB flash drive with Mandriva Linux on it. According to the article you can download the software free and put it on your own flash drive or you can buy it already on the flash drive direct from Mandriva. The download is huge...411 Mb. It won't be on your hard drive or interfere with Windows. I read about it but I haven't tried it. Take a look at the Mandriva web site. 73, Harvey KN6VP ----- Original Message ----- From: "Douglas Todd" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2007 9:48 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Station computer OS I am considering changing my station computer's operating system from Windows to Linux. Also, I have found that the Debian distribution offers superb ham radio support. Debian itself, I would not recommend to a new Linux user, but some of it's derivatives are excellent, such as Mepis, and Ubuntu. -- Darrell Bellerive Amateur Radio Stations VA7TO and VE7CLA Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I second the recommendation of a Debian-based Linux distribution (I currently use Ubuntu 6.10). While I am not aware of any Linux applications which perform some of the features of Ham Radio Deluxe, there are some pretty good applications out there. I use TLF for contest and general-purpose logging and gMFSK for digital modes. Xlog and Klog are also good logging programs. All of these interface with a large variety of radios using the hamlib library. All of these are available as Debian packages, which makes installation quite easy. A new digital mode program which will be available in the next release of Debian (and probably its offspring) is fldigi. You can find links to all of these at the URL listed above. 73 - Bob, N7XY _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hello Douglas.
Unfortunately there is no single suite of programs for Linux like Ham Radio Deluxe. You can come close with individual programs. FLdigi is an excellent Linux alternative to MixW on Windows. I'll second the motion on the Debian alternatives like Ubuntu. The install is actually easier and shorter than Windows. -- R.
