Another way to go is to buy the $40 Elecraft KUSB Serial to USB cable. DB9 on one end and USB on the other. Single cable and works great.

Unfortunately, there may be a compatibility problem with  some ham radio
accessory programs, at least the one that Elecraft supplied to me had
this problem.

I believe the one from Elecraft is just a normal one that uses the Prolific chipset, so it's nothing special. I just ordered my K3 yesterday and for simplicity's sake ordered their KUSB adapter along with.

So you probably won't be any better or worse off with the Elecraft adapter. In my case as long as I'll be able to get it to work with the K3 utility to talk to the K3, that's all I'm worried about. If it'll work with cocoamodem too that'll be icing on the cake, tho hi hi.

have 4 different  models of  adapters (one of which cost just £2)    all of
which work with two different desktop computers but as yet I have *not *found
one that will work with my newest computer a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.
Wonder if anyone else has had similar problems?

I would suspect that the driver that is installed in the laptop is at
issue, particularly if the laptop is running Windows 7.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.
I  use a Prolific based USB/serial converter and it
works no problen with the K3.
Use it for logging/radio control and firmware downloads.

Thanks Geoff for your comment. Have noted that brand details.  Did you get
it in UK?  I will be over there again in May, and in fact thats where the
laptop is as I forgot to bring back with me (as I  usually do) last year .

To answer anothers comments. I'm not using Windows 7,    Not likely,    I've
only just taken the courage to change to XP SP3    - Now I feel it is
reasonably stable-  (Relatively anyway)!

Yes I did buy the Keyspan adapter in the UK in May 2007 from MacHeaven -
which is a trading name of Allstuff Limited, 1 Lodge Close, Bicester,
Oxfordshire OX26 3TE.  At the time they had the Keyspan USA-19HS in stock.
Their Customer Service Queries email address according to the invoice I
received is [hidden email]
