I confirmed on K3 #125 with V 2.76, the behavior described by KB8AP below. I also noted that the power supply jumps up to the level expected for the power setting. So I believe that it is attempting to transmit during the second or so of the transient. This is not a good thing. I do not have a 6 kHz filter installed. John KH7T Hi all, I've just discovered something odd with my K3 (#1772). When I switch mode from DATA to AM via the front panel Mode button, the rig tries to transmit. The red TX light comes on momentarily and I get a ERR TXF message (if in band) or an END message (if out of band) in the VFO B area. I don't have the AM filter installed, so I don't think anything is actually going out over the air, but it doesn't seem like the rig should ever go into transmit on a mere mode change. It ONLY happens when going from DATA to AM, not when going from FM to AM or between any other modes in either direction. There is no mic connected to the rig, nor anything connected to the rear panel mic or line inputs. The only things connected to the rig are a paddle, an external speaker, and the antenna. It happens whether in VOX or PTT mode. I first noticed it with MCU 2.67 (although I can't say if it happened with earlier versions.) I've updated to the 2.76 beta release and it still happens. Anyone else see this? 73 -- Joe KB8AP _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hmmm. I do have a 6Khz filter installed. This is NOT happening on my
radio (2.76, #2091). If I configure the 6khz filter out, it still does not occur. Similar behavior here with
K3 #202. However it only happens when in VOX mode... not in PTT mode.
No ERR TXF or END displayed. Red Tx LED is on for about 1 second,
probably less. I do see a jump in amps on the K3 display to about 8 or
so amps. I do have the 6 kHz filter installed and enabled.

I just checked again and the
K3 *IS* showing "END" when the the K3 is tuned out of band. Definitely
no ERR TXF message, though.

I also have confirmed on K3 #921 the behavior described by KB8AP below. This radio was recently received from the factory 12/20/08 with MCU Version 2.73 installed. VOX is on when bandswitching and no 6K filter is installed so I do get the ERR TXF along with a 1 sec or so transmit light. |

Hi Joe:
Consider the possibility of it being the software program you are running on your PC in DATA mode. Quit the program first then switch to AM. It's frequently a safe bet to blame the computer for anything that goes wrong. 73, Mike K2MK _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. S/N 00929 /w FW 2.76, 6.0 kHz filter. Confirmed TX on switch from DATA to
AM when VOX on. Getting typical AM carrier output for about 1 second. Happens from either front panel mode change or PC control (two different programs). Happens from DATA to AM and DATAR to AM (I tried all combinations xx to AM via PC control). Also occurs /w 6.0 kHz filter disabled, and on any band. I THINK I spotted ERR ??? once on VFO B display but vy intermittent - could (should) not have been END as I was mid-point on all the bands. This has been around a long time... I went back to FW 1.96 (oldest I have) & it happens there! 73, Bill N2BC ----- Original Message ----- From: "K2MK" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]>; "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Friday, December 26, 2008 8:25 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Re: Transmit when switching from DATA to AM mode? > Hi Joe: > > Consider the possibility of it being the software program you are running > on your PC in DATA mode. Weird.... Had the VOX gain at 60, changed it to 40 and it's OK now. Set
it to 100 and it's still OK. What's weird is that there was no mic connected when it was acting up. I had also unplugged everything except 12V power and a dummy load and it failed every time. Seems that simply changing VOX gain did the trick. It's not 4/1/2009 already is it??? 73 all Bill N2BC ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greg" <[hidden email]> To: "Bill Coleman N2BC" <[hidden email]>; "K2MK" <[hidden email]>; <[hidden email]>; "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Friday, December 26, 2008 12:50 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Re: Transmit when switching from DATA to AM mode? > How high is your VOX setting? > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Bill Coleman N2BC" <[hidden email]> > To: "K2MK" <[hidden email]>; <[hidden email]>; "Elecraft Reflector" > <[hidden email]> > Sent: Friday, December 26, 2008 7:08 AM > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Re: Transmit when switching from DATA to AM mode? > > >> S/N 00929 /w FW 2.76, 6.0 kHz filter. I just checked mine (#202 w/latest beta firmware) with the VOX Gain at different levels. At VOX GN=0, 1, 2, 3, there is no change to transmit when switching from Data to AM Mode. At VOX GN >3 the K3 goes into momentary transmit when changing modes from Data to AM. 73, Ken K3IU ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Greg wrote: How high is your VOX setting? _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Aha!
I just unplugged the Heil/Elecraft headset from the back panel and now I can not make it happen at any VOX GN setting. Don't know why I didn't try that before. I also checked with the mic connected to the FP and the temporary switching to transmit does happen in that configuration (after I changed to MAIN:MIC SEL to FP.L bIAS) So... the problem doesn't exist here without a mic plugged into the K3. With the mic to the FP, it takes a VOX GAIN>5 to cause the momentary transmit. 73, Ken K3IU ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ken K3IU wrote:

Good catch, Greg. On my K3, I get the transmit-on-mode-change with
VOX gain > 10. At 10 or less, it doesn't happen.
