  I am using a 232USB9M-LS device from B&B Electronics
<http://www.bb-elec.com/product_family.asp?FamilyId=397&Trail=45&TrailType=Main>.
It is a locked serial number type device, which means that once set up
it makes no difference  what USB port you plug it into, it will ALWAYS
be whatever port number you assigned to it. At $69 plus shipping it is
more expensive, but it is nice to know that it work the same every time
and not cause the frustration of trying to figure out what comm port was
assigned every time you plug in.

I bought my FTDI converter from Array Solutions and I bought my PCIe RS232 card
from Tiger Direct.  It would be great if Elecraft would guarantee a FTDI
converter.  It is not required for the Elecraft program but sure would be
helpful for the Visual Basic programs that conflict with the Prolific
converters.

I purchased a USB Converter with my K3 #1025 also, but it is a Prolific chip set
and will not work with N1MM or XMlog and Win 7 but works well with Elecraft
software and Win 7 or Vista.

Whatever you get just make sure it has an FTDI chipset to minimize
your issues.  The ones that Elecraft sells now *ARE* using this
chipset.  They used to use the Prolific chipset and have since
upgraded (in my opinion) to the FTDI versions.

Re: USB - RS232

The Windows Device Manager can be used to examine the device's
"Manufacturer".

K3 Utility Help has a "Troubleshooting USB to Serial Adapters" page that
includes information on how to access this information.

In reply to this post by Earl N5ZM
You can look at Device Manager under serial ports and it will tell you whether
you are using a Prolific or a FTDI Driver.  It is probably Prolific.  The Win 7
issue didn't present until about Oct or Nov of 2009.

Earl,

The Prolific drivers here:
supposedly resolve the problems with Visual Basic and the
Prolific USB chipsets.  Since I use exclusively FTDI devices
I can't vouch for that information.

Thanks Dick,
It Is Prolific. Not really had a lot of problems with connectivity
(XP Media). I do use an A/B switch to change between the K3 Utility
(via the KUSB) and a MH Micro Keyer. When I swap I usually have to
disconnect and reconnect the KUSB to the computer and turn the K3 off
and back on. Sometimes more than once.

Re: USB - RS232

Don Cunningham
In reply to this post by Chris W7CTH
Chris,
I bought my adapter, which is an FTDI UC232R-10, from Mouser for under $20.
It was truly plug and play on Windows XP for this old man, who had tried
several others with NO success.  It works with the K3, P3 and other things I
have here, but I have not tried any logging programs like mentioned on here.
Mouser is out of stock right now, but shows them on order.

Thanks, Earl. I have two tiers of ABCD switch that I use to switch my
development computer to two other ABCD switches, one for each K3.  My MK2R+
is one of the other inputs to the 2nd tier.  I'm also switching my
development computer to a W2, K144XV, or KPA500 from time to time...

I got tired of constantly tearing the station apart...

I do all my development testing with a Prolific KUSB. I'm using Windows 7
(64-bit) and Windows XP normally.

At that time it used the prolific chip set.

You can also inspect the driver used in windows to identify it.

K3 SubRx active while transmitting?

Mark n2qt
In reply to this post by Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ
At one time there was some talk (assuming the internal isolation was high
enough)
to allow the subrx to remain active, listening on it's own antenna,  while
the K3
was in transmit.

Are there any new developments along this line?
