USB drivers

Cjscibelli
I am building my K3 #2341.  Must the rig be complete to install the drivers for the USB to Serial Port converter?  I just plugged in the USB to my PC and the device was noticed but I got an error message.

Here is what it said:

Problem caused by PL-2303 USB-to-Serial Port Adapter

This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between this version of Windows and PL-2303 USB-to-Serial Port Adapter.

This product is usually distributed by the company that manufactured your device or computer.

Note
If you bought PL-2303 USB-to-Serial Port Adapter from a retailer and installed it yourself, you will need to contact its manufacturer.

Any help would be appreciated.  BTW, the K3 Utility did download.  My PC is an HP Pavillon.

Re: USB drivers

Dick Dievendorff

You don’t need to completely build your K3 before installing USB to Serial Adapter drivers.

If your HP Pavilion uses Windows XP and you’re using a USB to Serial Adapter based on the Prolific PL-2303 (like the Elecraft KUSB and many others), you’ll find drivers on the Prolific web site, which is referenced from K3 Utility Help and the Elecraft software web page.

If your USB to Serial Adapter is an Elecraft KUSB, it should have come with installation instructions.  They’re also available on the Elecraft web site manuals section at http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KUSB_Manual_Rev_B.pdf

Here’s the driver link: http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31

If your HP Pavilion has Windows Vista, the instructions are a little different.  The drivers come from Microsoft Update (or already be installed, depending on the Service Pack level).  See the KUSB manual for more detailed instructions.

I bought the USB to Serial converter that Elecraft sells and I am using MS Vista.  I followed the instructions that came with the package.  I connected the USB side of the cord and got the message that a device had been detected and it was installing the device driver software, but very quickly I got a popup that offered 2 choices: "Install the disk which came with the device." (I didn't get a disk) or  " I don't have the disk. Show me other options".  Next I let the program search for the drivers on my PC but it failed.

Eventually I get the message I posted the last time:

As far as Windows Update, I ran it before I tried this but I have it set to automatically download and install updates and there was nothing for me to download.  Has anybody successfully obtained the drivers for Vista?  I appreciate the help.

Re: USB drivers

Jim AB3CV
if you have vista or xp set for "automatic updates" it will only do the critical updates.

you need to do a manual update and when you get the windowsupdate page click on "custom" updates.

that will take you to a page where other things are available for downloading and updating.

you will likely find your usb driver there.
