With all the talk of wiring microphone cables and such I was wondering
if anyone had a source for buying small quantities of really high quality, ultra flexible, shielded cable? I was thinking 2 conductor plus a shield. This would also make a great cable for attaching to a paddle. I'm looking for something like a medical grade cable. Any ideas?? -- 73, Gary K9GS Check out K9NS on the web: http://www.k9ns.com Greater Milwaukee DX Association: http://www.gmdxa.org Society of Midwest Contesters: http://www.w9smc.com ************************************************ ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Heil wire is very good quality & flexible.
Here is one company that handles it: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/cable/2645.html There are others. 73, Tony W7GO On Sun, Feb 19, 2012 at 12:23 PM, Gary K9GS <[hidden email]> wrote: > With all the talk of wiring microphone cables and such I was wondering > if anyone had a source for buying small quantities of really high > quality, ultra flexible, shielded cable? > > I was thinking 2 conductor plus a shield. What you're looking for is portable microphone cable. The good manufacturers of the raw cable are Belden and Gepco. The music store will sell you cable with connectors on it that you don't need, so it will be more expensive. A sound contractor can simply cut you a piece of cable off of one the reels in his shop. Make sure that he understands that you want PORTABLE mic cable, NOT rack wiring cable. Both kinds are a twisted pair inside a shield, but the portable cable will have a nice braid shield, while the rack cable will be foil with a drain wire. You do NOT need medical cable -- portable mic cable is good quality and rugged. 73, Jim K9YC (a pro audio guy) ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I have quite successfully used sections of HDMI cables for multi
shielded cables in many applications. There are four shielded twisted pairs one HDMI cable plus a number of signal lines. among other things I used one when I adapted my David Clark aviation headset for my rig. I used one shielded line for the mic and the other for the ear phones and one of the other lines to provide bias for the mic. works great. For analog use I would think that most HDMI cables are fine but if you want good grade some high end brands like monster cable can be pretty good quality cable. Another source is VGA cable with if memory server 3 shielded lines for RGB. these are unbalanced (singe ended) Last is USB there are four conductors two are twisted pair typically green and white they are all shielded in one jacket. I bought a 100-ft roll of S-Video cable from www.allelectronics.com, part
number CB-285. Price is $18. This is a black, round cable that includes two internal shielded cables. This is good stuff - relatively small and flexible. Hi,
I used cable from Heil to make up a lead for my Heil GM2 hand mike. The cable is nice and floppy. http://www.heilsound.com/amateur/products/heilwire/ I bought a 10' length from the shop that I bought the mic from. The PTT pair is outside the screening for the mic pair to try and keep digital noise away from the analogue signal. It works nicely on my K3. The price is roughly US$1/ft. The 'Stealth Connector' from Heil works nicely with the K3 and I used that along with a 4pin XLR cable jack to make my own mic lead. http://www.heilsound.com/amateur/products/8pin/ I don't have shares in Heil, but I do like their mics, headsets, cables and plugs. The only things that are "high grade" about Monster cables and their competitors are the advertising hype and the price. As in "a fool and his money are easily separated." Stores LOVE crap like that because they are very high profit items, but they offer no real value. Stick to cable from good manufacturers. Belden and Gepco are the good US mfrs, and there are dozens of no-name companies selling stuff with questionable construction and performance. Canare is ok, but not great, and is overpriced. West Penn is also a step down. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
The only things that are "high grade" about Monster cables and their
competitors are the advertising hype and the price. I agree that monster cable is a thousand times overkill and equally overpriced but in many cases the cables and wires are high quality. speaker cables not included. often you can find them in a surplus store like I did (beware of knock offs) like Princess auto I recently purchased some monster HDMI and component video cables at Princess auto at a surplus price about 20% of retail. I repurposed them changing ends etc for use at the theatre and in the case of the HDMI for my headset. I was quite surprised at the quality of the cables with multiple foil and tight braided shields and decent gauge center conductors. Stick to cable from good manufacturers. Belden and Gepco are the good US mfrs, and there are dozens of no-name companies selling stuff with questionable construction and performance. Canare is ok, but not great, and is overpriced. West Penn is also a step down. having worked in theatres with audio for years I have found that the beldens and other "pro grade" cables are great quality especially when bought by the spool or in custom snakes etc but be aware that often those short cables in the blister packs hanging on the rack at the music store with belden labels are not always what you expect, I have had to change ends on belden off the shelf cables because of an internal breakage only to find a thick outer insulation and over a poorly shielded and sometimes not even braided coax or pair. at the theatre I no longer buy short lengths for this reason just make them up myself from the spool. I got the impression from the OP that he was looking for short lengths and not for a spool so thats why I suggested what I did. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

FYI,
I use bluejeanscable.com now. They use Belden cable and I find their prices and quality to be very good. 73, Byron N6NUL On Sun, Feb 19, 2012 at 9:43 PM, Jim Brown <[hidden email]> wrote: > On 2/19/2012 6:59 PM, David Moes wrote: >> For >> analog use I would think that most HDMI cables are fine but if you want >> good grade some high end brands like monster cable can be pretty good >> quality cable. > > The only things that are "high grade" about Monster cables and their > competitors are the advertising hype and the price.
