VOX on the K3

K5HM
My new K3 has VOX capability of course.

I haven't used VOX since the fifties when SSB first came out.  Back then it
was fairly annoying since it usually clipped the first syllable short when
you started to speak.

Just wondering if anyone is using it regularly.  Is it better than PTT or a
foot switch in contests or casual operation?

It's ease to decide for yourself. Push and hold the TEST button. Listen to
yourself using MON. Play with the various VOX settings like GAIN and DELAY.

The K3 besides offering VOX Gain and anti-VOX settings also offers a
"noise gate" that is very useful for cutting out shack noise while
responding to your voice.  There is some interaction between all three
so some experimentation will be needed to acheive a desired action.

I don't use VOX regularly, however, I have found it easier on the K3 to
use VOX during a rare phone contest and in a special event operation
than PTT.  It's a good tool for when you're the center of attention.

I'm a pretty active contester, and I've always used VOX for SSB and all
digital modes, including RTTY. Works fine. I use a Yamaha CM500,
carefully placing the mic a bit above and to the side of my mouth to
avoid breath pops and give me room to slurp coffee while the computer is
calling CQ

I use audio editing software to record contest messages, and spend time
making them sound as good as I can. On CQs, I add a low level "click" a
few msec before the message starts to make sure that the VOX pulls in.
I don't need it on a live mic, but it helps on the recording.

Re: VOX on the K3

Todd - k1tm
I only use VOX on the K3.  Set correctly (using the noise gate), even with my amp's fan running just feet away, I have no issues with false triggering, or clipped syllables.  I use a headset when I want to put my feet up and sit back, or a Heil Gold line mike on a boom with a shock mount.  It is the best VOX operation of any rig that I have used in 35 years of operating.  I highly recommend you try it.

Thanks for all the positive comments on the K3 VOX.  I have a Goldline mic
and am just waiting for the boom to arrive so I can set it up.

Contesting is my thing and I was hoping that VOX would allow hands free
without having to use a foot switch.
